gate valve
A gate valve, also known as a sluice valve, is a valve that opens by lifting a barrier (gate) out of the path of the fluid. Gate valves require very little space along the pipe axis and hardly restrict the flow of fluid when the gate is fully opened. The gate faces can be parallel but are most commonly wedge-shaped (in order to be able to apply pressure on the sealing surface).
Hey guys in the know. I have paid for a heating and plumbing contract and had to pay my excess 3 times for the same thing still not fixed.
The issue is quite simple to repair not sure why any one of the 2 plumbers could not fix it. Why am I paying for cover.
The auto air vents in part of the...
I think we have an indirect hot water cylinder, we are trying to replace a sink. However there are no isolation valves on the in-between the taps and the piping. Is there a way to turn off the cold water flow to the taps, without turning off the main water supply incoming to house ? I have...
Is it possible to buy the seal that goes between the bonnet and the valve body? Not the packing nut but the seal/washer/gasket (PTFE maybe?) that goes into a recess in the valve body opening where the stem screws into.
I have a gate valve that shuts water off to outside hose bib, and it leaks through the valve stem when open. The valve was installed 25 years ago when the house was new, and is used seasonally to shut water off to the outside hose bib to prevent the hose bib from being damaged during winter...
Hi, new member here, so hello! I recently bought a house that needs heaps of work, so have no money and lots to learn along the way.
Ive had a new WB 8000 Life 40kw system boiler installed on my gravity fed system. The house is a long bungalow with roof rooms which had no heating so I asked my...
I’ve recently moved into a bungalow with an open vented central heating system installed in 1987 with 8mm microbore running to the 10 radiators. One of the radiators needs replacing as it’s got a small corrosion pinhole in the body and we wanted to fit a larger towel rail anyway. Having gone...
Good morning,
I would appreciate any advice on the following: I live on the 2nd floor (top floor of building) and have a stopcock under my kitchen sink, one stopcock for water near the boiler in the kitchen and in the hallway in a high cupboard a cold water feed red gate valve. I want to know...
Excuse my wonderful drawing.
Someone put a gate valve here. If I've used the wrong symbol for a valve forgive me you'll have to imagine the right one.
There isn't one anywhere on the cold feed from the CWSC.
Since - if closed this isolates the water in the cylinder from the open vent - my...
Hi, this is my first post to this esteemed forum so please excuse any faux pas.
The red wheel head gate compression valve has seized half on-half off so I have unthreaded the nuts holding it in place (wasn't easy) ready to replace with a 22mm Pegler ball valve (bought from S...x - the only chain...
Hi all,
My customer has a gatevalve/bypass off the primary flow into his cylinder.
He has fiddled with it (I think he was trying to turn off the water, and got the wrong valve).
How best to set it up?
I'll have to check to see if the system is on a three-port or two-port valves (if it's...
Hi,
about to replace some radiators, so need to drain system.
While i'm doing it I'm thinking about doing a mod to make future drain downs quicker:
Idea is adding a gatevalve on header tank outlet, and just below the gatevalve add a tee to a pipe that goes up to above tank level with another...
Hi,
My central heating has been bad for many years now (several radiators not heating up) and I've only just found that the gate valve in the bypass circuit is fully open - water can flow around through the pump and back to the boiler without going through any radiators.
Shutting the valve...
Hi.
We discovered a leak in our house's kitchen.
It was coming up through the floor in the corner and was about half a bucket of clear water an hour.
The kitchen sits 2 steps lower than the front of the house which is on the street.
Long story short, the plumber found the gate valve...
Hello all
Spot of trouble, help much appreciated.
I'm working in a house with an ancient boiler, a Stelrad Ideal Classic RS40 with a hot water cylinder, apparently without a heating element. Never worked on such a system before.
Since altering the gate vale settings the boiler seems to get...

I have to do abet of work to do on a house that has lead coming in to a gate valve then an iso valve. The owner doesn't want to replace in mdpe. From boundary stop tap at the moment. So to isolate the houses water supply I have the iso valve or the boundary stop tap in the road. As the gate...
Hi all
Trying to change 15mm gate valve (used as bypass valve) . And I cut it off the pipes of both side and found out it is snapped internally, But the gate/wedge is gone missing, the valve was in vertical position just next to the pump,
as Diameter of the gate/wedge I think must be little...
I have a PN16 Gate Valve that turns but does not stop. i.e. it simply keeps turning. Is it possible to replace the centre screw mechanism [even if I need to buy a complete valve to obtain the spare part] or will I need to replace the whole valve. The question arises because I cannot see how to...

Hi,
I got fantastic advice from here and sorted out my shower. However it has stopped working again. I have on investigation discovered that the gate valve on the cold water pipe is broken. Will I need a pro or can I do it myself? If I do shall I go for the ball valve?
Thank you.
I have a problem with a faulty hot water feed valve from my hot water tank.
After isolating the valve to carry out some work in the bathroom it will not now open to a stop, ie it keeps turning as if the spindle is faulty. With the result that no hot water will now flow to the hot taps. In order...
