Hi, Please help. I have had a new radiator fitted but it is not getting hot all over yet the inlet pipe is scorching hot but the return is flat cold. I have had a plumber out who has bled and balanced the system but still the same problem. He has suggested a bigger pump may be needed as the one fitted is a 5 metre head and he thinks a 6 metre head will make this radiator work? Any advice greatly appreciated thanks.

If your symptoms (Not getting hot at the bottom) are correct, then you need to remove it and flush it. If it's the last radiator (furthest away) from boiler, then pump capacity may be the problem.

Yes if all other rads turned off it gets very hot. This is a larger new replacement radiator the old one got as hot as the others but was half the size of the new one. I have removed both ends independently and flushed through the other end with no blockages or sludge etc coming out. Would the larger radiator really make that much difference to the pump?

I went to a property who had the same issue. Turned off all other rads and low and behold it got hot. Pump was fine and powerful enough so was advised to book it in for a powerflush.

If it's a larger rad then it will give out more heat. To give out more heat, it needs to HAVE more heat. This means it will need a greater flow of hot water than the smaller radiator it replaces.

So it needs either more pressure (which is what you are giving it by turning off the other rads, or balancing the system properly as suggested above), or less resistance to flow in the pipework to this rad (de-sludging the pipes or fit larger bore pipes).

Probably...
