bending

In applied mechanics, bending (also known as flexure) characterizes the behavior of a slender structural element subjected to an external load applied perpendicularly to a longitudinal axis of the element.
The structural element is assumed to be such that at least one of its dimensions is a small fraction, typically 1/10 or less, of the other two. When the length is considerably longer than the width and the thickness, the element is called a beam. For example, a closet rod sagging under the weight of clothes on clothes hangers is an example of a beam experiencing bending. On the other hand, a shell is a structure of any geometric form where the length and the width are of the same order of magnitude but the thickness of the structure (known as the 'wall') is considerably smaller. A large diameter, but thin-walled, short tube supported at its ends and loaded laterally is an example of a shell experiencing bending.
In the absence of a qualifier, the term bending is ambiguous because bending can occur locally in all objects. Therefore, to make the usage of the term more precise, engineers refer to a specific object such as; the bending of rods, the bending of beams, the bending of plates, the bending of shells and so on.

    Pipe Bending Tool Question

    I have a 155mm/22mm Record Pipe Bending tool which has 3 graduations on the formers. I thought they were marked at say 30, 45 and 90, but on closer inspection the lines don't even align with the bottom of the former channel? In which case, bending the pipe until it aligns with the graduations...

    Pipe Bending

    I am doing a bathroom refit. Very little pipe bending required. Probably a couple of 20 degree bends to get over an existing pipe and some slight realignments. I was going to treat myself to a pipe bender (£45) but in view of the limited use thought an internal spring (£4) might be better...

    Pipe bending help?

    hello. i'm new here, and new to plumbing. for my course i have been asked to work out the exact length of a 45/135 degree bend in 22mm copper. and do not have a clue how to work it out. i've been given 2 measurements : 275 and 300 each side of the 135 bend. whats the total length of pipe?

    Hi I was bending pipe today abd a apprentice was trying to show me a rule to follow! He said there is a simple equation called 'measure back' but he could not remember the rule! Does anybody remember being taught this at college?
