Just finishing off a new build today big house £2,000,000 plus, was outside doing water to the barbie area the sound & vision guy was doing the sound system for the barbeque when he got a call from a builder which went something like "I've already told you what you needed but you didn't listen I told you the sky remote won't close the curtains or turn on the lights but if thats what you want it'll be £1000 for materials and a days labour at £450 which is cheap, you know that our day rate is £525". Fork me I nearly choked on me flux brush if i'd tried to charge half that i'd had been told to do one how can they value cable pulling that much higher than plumbing really peed off now cause the stats we used have cat 5 cable to them so we're doing the same job as them for a pittance :32:anyway sorry for the long rant must go need to finish my fasttrack online data cable course.

I work for a patents lawyer who retired and sold up. He had a degree in engineering and law and was able to get very very rich. All 3 daughters live at home, sorry in each of their homes in the garden and when one wanted a bigger house, he bought next door for her. Nice work and always coughs on time :)

I dunno if I mentioned this in the thread allready. (I can't be bothered to read back 3 pages).

I worked in a house about 6 years ago, and the guy was uber minted. He had a sound and vision company there, and they were bringing in 2" waste pipes stuffed with data cables. It was crazy. A lot of it was "future proofing". So just cables not linked in.

Well guess what? The future is wireless technology so a fat waste of money that was! Thei bill was £250K. That is obscene, and they all knew they were on to a winner. Their was also a specialist lighting company at the job. They charged a ridiculous amount too. For their mood lighting plan. The fitters weren't creaming the real money though the firms were.

haha, yep, you told that story on page 1 :p

I see the figures have gone up since I last told it. That's the BS factor for you! No I think the subbies took about £60K and the firm took about 250 (if memory serves me correct) they were all having a good laugh about the money they were making and not keeping it secret.

It was 32mm pipe the first time. You're not into fishing by any chance?

The difference is in the perceived value of what they are getting. A home cinema is a big bling item. Something to outdo the Jones' with.
Everyone has a bathroom and central heating is not even worth the conversation, even the peasants have that now.

Normally, if i have a problem with the sound and vision ie picture but no sound i find a wee bunch of flowers from the local florist and a cuddle resumes normal service

thats so true when i first started doing heating it was the first time people had had it and the were gratefull now its just a unnecessary exspense to most people

£525 could be for his team rather than a single guy?[/QUOTE

Bugger me I thought this thread was dead and buried anyway it was for a single bloke not a team.
I've now raised my prices to match, bit quiet at the moment I'm sure it'll pick up soon:disappointed:

Tbh I'd love to get into this stuff. Our lasses dad does it. More interesting than plumbing, easier and less overheads. Less competition too.

no effin way its more interesting than plumbing pulling a few cables and connecting them to a box??? no craftsmanship, minimal technical knowhow, and a smug effin grin? no thanks mate stick your cat 5 where the brown stuff flows out
