Just finishing off a new build today big house £2,000,000 plus, was outside doing water to the barbie area the sound & vision guy was doing the sound system for the barbeque when he got a call from a builder which went something like "I've already told you what you needed but you didn't listen I told you the sky remote won't close the curtains or turn on the lights but if thats what you want it'll be £1000 for materials and a days labour at £450 which is cheap, you know that our day rate is £525". Fork me I nearly choked on me flux brush if i'd tried to charge half that i'd had been told to do one how can they value cable pulling that much higher than plumbing really peed off now cause the stats we used have cat 5 cable to them so we're doing the same job as them for a pittance :32:anyway sorry for the long rant must go need to finish my fasttrack online data cable course.

Some times I wish I did aerials or washing machine repairs. Can't be that hard, no qualifications governing bodies. Hardly any specialist tools, and there's to many gsr,s.

I couldn't agree more!

why do you think you are worth more than him because you are a plumber

I worked on a job a couple of years back, and the sound and vision guys were using inch and half waste pipe as their conduit. They brought loads of wires in.

It was only a kitchen extension and converting the old kitchen to a TV room.

The guys on site were all subbies, working for a company who charged big bucks. They were lovely blokes, and very honest. Half the cables they brought in were to 'future proof' the property. In other words they were not actually doing anything. They said, by the time the future arrived the cables would be outdated anyway, and useless. They also said a single fibre optic cable could do the job of a conduit worth of cable...but it's expensive.

Anyway the total for their work was £60K but most of that went to the firm employing them. Looked like a fairly interesting line of work....and not hard to get into. Very niche at the moment.

Most people haven't got money to blow on an inteligent lighting system, and speaker in the ceiling ect, ect.

Alarm engineers earn OK too. Similar work.

Grass is always greener in the other Guys patch.

Stick with what you know, less stress.

Tbh I'd love to get into this stuff. Our lasses dad does it. More interesting than plumbing, easier and less overheads. Less competition too.

The dirtier your hands in your job, the less you're paid.

HOWEVER ... my theory ...

The dirtier your hands in your job, the more useful your job is to others.

So, by my reckoning, farmers, dustmen, sewage workers, plumbers, cleaners, etc have the lowest paid of jobs but do the most useful jobs for other people.

ALSO ...

The cleaner your hands are in your job, the dirtier your occupation is viewed by others ...

Examples of these are:

lawyers, mp's, bankers, etc ...

The potential to make a profit is only hindered by a lack of potential to go out there and make it.

Have you been reading those american self help books again?
No mate, one thing that pees me off on this forum are the ones who come on moaning and greeting that they have no work. Instead of spending time in front of a computer, they could be out there delivering leaflets and bringing the work in.

Fair one, thing is I reckon most plumbers/ heating engineers are tradesman not salesman. And probably like me only want to earn a decent living, and lets be honest it is hard yack. Leaflets are probably good to a point, as long as you dont mind a shed load of pricing for high percentage of time wasters.

The difference is in the perceived value of what they are getting. A home cinema is a big bling item. Something to outdo the Jones' with.
Everyone has a bathroom and central heating is not even worth the conversation, even the peasants have that now.

Normally, if i have a problem with the sound and vision ie picture but no sound i find a wee bunch of flowers from the local florist and a cuddle resumes normal service

Another fair point, but why do the public perceive us as "making a fortune" but not actually pay a fortune.

Make them shyt in a field and wash in a bucket of cold water for a month or so and see how much value they would place on us then. They don't appreciate it.

Lets do it, they,d have to bring the army in. And while were at it we wont fix there boilers either, let the feckers freeze as well. Vive La revolution!

I like the reference!

The slight paraphrasing of Freewheeling Franklin I slipped in there, that what you mean Connor?

I'm introducing people to the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers one quote at a time!

They are absolute class John!. I had most of them when I was in college, Fat Freddy's antics really had me in stitches.
I would love to try and get them again.
My old dear tidied my room one day after I moved out.. them, a Motorhead Leather cover album and my original Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath LP went to some lucky bugger at a charity shop!.. I just started speaking to her again last week!

Favourite Fat Freddy quote:

-" Dogs are facist"
-"How can you tell a dogs politics?"
-"Have you ever seen a Police cat?"

One of the many reasons I loath and despise my exwife is for the fact she got shot of a lot of my old gear before I could collect it, including a full set of freaks, fat freddie scat, original Jethro Tull and Zeppelin albums - Stand Up by JT had a pop up of the band when you opened the album cover, and Zeppelin III had a spinning insert in the cover, and shed loads more!

I will never forgive her that. Shagging the neighbour I've all but forgotten!

Till now.

Grrrrrrrrr...............
