does anybody know of a gadget that will tell me exactly where to drill through walls, to get a straight line through the walls, I am thinking of something similar to a pipe and cable detector.

but will go through 300mm or 400mm walls.

scenario 1, drilled through wall but no access from inside, so went diagionally, cam back straight. ended up having to relocate condensate pipe as pipe too close to condensate.

scenario 2, had to get a soil pipe through a roof space that was around 1.5 metres, no access to loft space, had to estimate fall.

on both occassions i could of done with a starting point from outside as to know exactly where my hole was going.

perhaps magnets or sensors would be good.

usually a tape and a level is sufficent to tell me where to drill some times you just have to offer up a prayer to the god of plumbing and go for it
there are devices that would allow you to pin point the spot to drill but they tend to fill a small lorry and cost thousands
must admit ive thought the same over the years and no doubt it will come eventually
the ending up to close to what you want to connect scenario is part of the learning curve jase always try to give your self room to maneuver

I always drill a small diameter pilot hole first to mark the centre of where the hole is to come out. Tool station sell 1metre long drill bits. At least a small hole can be filled in.

Cheers for that system. The simplest ways are always the best.

Not at all, it's me what is simple for not thinking of it all by myself.:6:

Now, now kiddies let's all behave like big grown up jobby mechanics like we're supposed too.

i hereby award you an honorary nvq in fitting bathstore taps. there you go.

have i missed something lol? this bathstore talk is everywhere.

i know there are devices which allow this, we have got a specialist mob out to drill through heavy duty walls and they use a large hilti core drill with a laser pinpointer which is only accurate to within a couple of inches so not full proof, we usually left the boiler until they have cored the hole as they cored from outside. They stuck the receiver to the centre point inside and lined up the drill with it outside

the bathstore stuff is that according to their fitting instructions, you have to have a nvq3 to fit their taps otherwise it invalidates the guarantee!

I know damn fine plumbers who haven't got any qualifications and could whip the bum of any newbie with certificates coming out their ears. Bits of paper don't mean jot in the real world. It's how good you are that really counts.

Oh and as I said earlier, I've got City and Guilds Advanced not a NVQ so as from tomorrow I'm not doing any more of those really difficult to fit Bathstore taps! LOL

mind boggles at how a forum on drilling walls has got onto taps? thanks for everybodys help, I am going to try and email a few companies see if they have any advice or maybe give them some ideas

Jase, why not try the experts in hole cutting....Marcrist. I'm sure the'll point you in the right direction if you tell them that if they help, thousands of plumbers on the UKPlumbers forum will read about it!

As Gerry said, Hilti do a transpointer but they are still not exact. Ive stuck on a screenprint so you can see the price. You may be cheaper and just as accurate with a couple of long 10mm drill bits

Hi, basic question, any insight much appreciated. Looking to have an outdoor tap in my front porch fed from 15mm pex coming up from suspended floor. Pic 1 is inside porch, pex temporarily clipped to give an idea of pipe placement (ignore shoddy blockwork of booted cowboy builder!), Pic 2 is...
