I have highlighted in bold the possible reasons you can complain to Companies House about Limited Companies, just because they are limited makes not one jot of difference if they are dodgy or failing to provide what they are promising. Bank accounts can be frozen and if need be the company directors assets seized.

There must be reasonable grounds to suspect fraud, serious misconduct, material wrong-doing or significant irregularity in a company's affairs for us to investigate.The Insolvency Service does not only investigate the affairs of companies that are subject to insolvency proceedings. It can also investigate companies that are actively trading, or which have ceased trading without entering into insolvency proceedings, using powers of investigation under the Companies Acts.
Please note – ‘company’ can also refer to a Limited Liability Partnership. There must be reasonable grounds to suspect fraud, serious misconduct, material wrong-doing or significant irregularity in a company's affairs for an investigation to take place. The Service can investigate:
Limited companies and limited liability partnerships that are active and have a business address in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, including overseas registered companies which are operating within the UK. Companies that are actively trading, or which have ceased trading without going into compulsory insolvency proceedings.
Investigations are fact finding in nature. They are not criminal investigations, although they may address conduct which could amount to criminal behaviour. Our approach is to take a proportionate and realistic view of issues brought to our attention, and to investigate aspects of corporate behaviour which might harm both the business community and the public generally. With this in mind we wish to know about the activities of any company which appears to be causing significant harm to consumers, trade suppliers, service providers, investors etc., who have had dealings with it. Also where there is any strong indication of serious misconduct in the management or affairs of a company.
Such activities would include companies that:

  • Are set up for an illegal or improper purpose (‘Sham’ companies);
  • Engage in, mainly consumer targeted, ‘scams’ where there is little or no intention of supplying or providing the ‘products’ promised;
  • Promote, advertise or otherwise participate in bogus investment schemes or other ‘get rich quick’ opportunities;
  • Engage in asset stripping operations;
  • Target vulnerable groups using high pressure selling techniques;
  • Take fees, deposits or other advance payments, in circumstances where there is little or no reasonable prospect of providing the goods or services offered;
  • Falsely claim to ‘ring fence’ or otherwise protect customer or client monies/funds in their possession;
  • Falsely claim to honour guarantee or warranty obligations;
  • Falsely claim official status, approval, authorisation, bonding, licensing etc., from or by a government or other official body;
  • Falsely represent, or otherwise abuse charitable, educational or religious status;
  • Falsify their accounts, documents of contract or account, or security or references etc. In order to present their affairs more favourably;
  • Improperly (and successfully) evade debt and/or transfer assets at under value to the detriment of third parties who have dealt in good faith;
  • Are managed or controlled by persons who are prohibited, by law, from participating in the control or management of a company’s affairs;
  • Are improperly managed such that reputational damage to the UK corporate regime is likely to result.
You can lodge a complaint or provide information of undesirable activity or behaviour in a variety of ways. See the section about "How to complain about a company".

Is it not a legal requirement to issue a copy of a contract to someone if requested?

I never said it was, but only a fool will enter into a contract without having first read what the contract is about. In fact there is little point in even discussing a possible contract without knowing what the small print says. Of course you could have a verbal contract, but when it goes pear shape and your in the county court asking for your money back the judge will say "show me the evidence" and it will be no good saying "well he said blah blah blah"

Lol I know you didn't :p I'm sure I read somewhere though that if someone asks for a written contract to read and/or have appraised prior to entering a contract then you are obliged to send them one before going any further.

Same here for PL area,! that covers most of Devon, chap call'd Ian Jackson ? Think they used a differant name last time, Problem is with lack of work in this area some poor sod will fall for it and part with is cash. They have been trying this area for at least 4 to 5 years first came accross them on Gumtree, but never come accross any-one who as took up there offer.

Yeah thats right , i'm in the pl area and thats who sent the email ian jackson , just sent a very curt reply back . like you say as competative as it is down here some poor plumber will get sucked into it!!!

Had the same email and several others my delete button is nearly worn out

Quite funny, the ********s e- mailed me today with their "We don't hand out contracts willy nilly" ........guff

At the top was a list of about 400 plumbers they were offering an "exclusive" contract to in the DH area that they had accidentally left on top of the e-mail. :cool4::cool4:

Just replied to their e- mail.....

You are a bit of a ---- Kenny, leaving the list of other people you are trying to con on top of your e- mail.

NUS is run from a ------- PO box, not some national conpany.

Stop spamming me or I will complain to trading standards.

Tried, but Orange account couldn't send that many.... it's the one I use just for giving out to anyone, so attracts a lot of rubbish, a bit inept on the computer.

Hello I found this forum while checking up on Nus, I was first surprised that a thread on it was higher in a google search than a national company, and interested in what been put here.

I also received a tender to contract in my area, filled in the form and got a speedy phone call the next morning from someone asking all the expected questions and all seemed legitimate to me.

Was confirmed I was throgh the first process and was sent a contract, normal plain contract like I've seen many times before, your welcome to see it. Now iv worked for large housing association and know that paying is not unusual, but will be surprised and suspicious if awarded it without them wanting to meet me face to face, usually where I was wouldn't be managers if long distance from head office but at least a local contractor they already had on books to just give them any paperwork and meet gree (spy).

Now iv read this I'm obviously dubious of a company so called national set up within 2 years and not saying anything about bathroom guy being fake but why not ask his new buddies about it and tell us, or at least say who he's worked for other than website ones, he'll I sent them my 2 largest contract details, and my last 5 most recent customers to use as references, I and especially a large company should be happy to let you ring a customer and talk to them about them.

So you may have saved me £2100, thank you for that, I will see the process throgh and make mind up before paying but doubtfull. Was surprised the contract time the most all ours were month minimum time to check throgh, ring references and met before decision. nus emaild tue, replied thur, rang me fri, said deciding mon!

Oh did notice they have my favourite boiler company on there website so will ring rep monday and see what he/they have to say about them.

Never had an E-mail off them, but two days ago I had a text message off them offering the same contract in the BB area. Bothered me how they got my number because I don't advertise anymore but they had that and my business name. The only thing I have done this last week is renew my PL insurance so have had a few quotes and filled in a few websites, can only presume my details have been sold to them by an insurance company ????

They rang me today to ask why I declined the contract and if there was anything they could do, I said your business dident pan out and he hung up on me! Definitely a scam, who wouldn't defend there business

Didn't think so. Any genuine firm would be happy taking a commission from each job. Really hope no-one falls for it. Lot of people starting up not as cynical as I've gotten!

Phoned Sheffield trading standards yesterday to see if these clowns have popped up on their radar. Bloke said nothing on their database, no complaints or owt but as they've now done a search it will be flagged if anyone does get stung.

I notice on their website it says "oppertunities"

Really professional looking, eh?

has anyone had any dealings with service magic keep getting e mails asking me to buy leads cos i slipped up and made a genral enquiry because the advert looked good and i had no work on at the time not sure how many they sell the lead to or if its even worth bothering because the custmers might just play the plumbers off on prices so you end up paying to do a job for next to nothing think i have just answered my own question but just on the off chance it works has anyone got any better ideas

don't join. you pay a lot for lead and 5 tradesmen can get customers details, not like rated people who gives 3, so similar carp. i had a call from service magic asking for some deposit etc.

Out of curiosity, just after I joined GSR (not in search yet) I had a call from some guy calling on behalf of some charity asking me to join their magazine with promising of advertising etc. So to me it seems like somebody in GSR is selling details.

Appogies in advance for the lenth of it...

Dear Sir/ Madam
I have been asked to speak to Companies in the area with a view to implementing someone suitable to look after a number of tenanted properties on behalf of our clients. These are located in and around the N postal code area. This is in relevance to the ongoing gas works and subsequent maintenance requirements over the next 24 months.
For the last 2 or 3 weeks I have been in contact with a number of engineers and we are slowly compiling our shortlist of interested parties. If the below Contract sounds like something that could benefit your company and/or you would like some further information, then please do not hesitate to get back in touch. All the information is detailed below, if you could read through it carefully and get in touch that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Drew Lewis

Audit

The Contract will be based on a 24 Month Period and there will be an audit done every 3 months on 3.5% of the work. This is something that our clients have requested that we are required to do as part of the agreement we have in place. As you will probably imagine, this in turn also makes sure all service levels are being met and ensure all relevant feedback is being given to all parties involved.

Contracts Fee

The N Postal Code area contract is completely free to apply for and there is absolutely no fee required in order to find out more information or to be considered for the contract.
The Contractors Fee is in place as we no longer take any commission from our Contractors for any work that is issued out and completed throughout the duration of this contract. This is due to previous experiences when running similar contracts within the UK.
In the past we have found by only working on a commission basis, there is no firm level of commitment in place, resulting in the level of service we were receiving and the reliability of the Engineer to be much lower than what both ourselves and our Clients would expect.
By stopping the commission structure and implementing the Contractors Fee at the start of the contract, we have now established that the commitment levels between ourselves and our Contractors have drastically improved resulting in better workmanship and a better all round services being offered to our clients.
Also from a completely selfish point of view, we have to ensure we are attracting the best possible Companies to these contracts and removing the timewasters from the process from day one.
The Contractors Fee for the N postal code area is a one off fee of £1823+VAT.
This is only made payable for the contract if you were to be the selected Company and implemented for the contract. This would be paid on commencement of the contract only, there are no more financial obligations throughout the duration of the contract.
If you feel that you are the right company or engineer for this contract and can deliver the service requirements for our National Clients and would like to find out more regarding the Contract opportunity then please either fill in the Vendors form by clicking the link provided and a member of the team will contact you back and cover all you enquiries and explain the types of work and the areas in question that you will be covering.

If you feel this contract is for you please fill out the vendors application form as Linked Contractors Vendor form online or call me Drew Lewis on 01563 525 992.

I***************e Ltd, Manchester (L** *****l): Gas Safe: 5*****

I have been working with NUS Ltd since August 2011 and our working relationship has grown from strength to strength. My Company offers a full General Maintenance package ranging from basic plumbing right through to full electrical installs and I have been receiving all types of work from this contract from day one.

When I started with NUS, I only had 10 Engineers employed directly but over the past few months with the workload I have been provided from this contract, I now employ 27 Engineers from various sectors to cover the work from NUS and my own personal contracts and to date it has been a great business decision to accept the contract offer from NUS.

The initial fee that I had to pay when awarded the contract was made back and more within the first month of taking on the contract and I have never looked back from the day I was awarded the contract.

I would recommend NUS Ltd to any other Company that is looking for a consistent level of work and the opportunity to grow their Business.

thanks for the advice about service magic thought as much but you have confirmed my doubts and yes i had a similar call from a magazine shortly after joining gas safe but was then as now skint so couldnt do it anyway advertised in my local paper but their was 27 other plumbers advertising the same week so that was a waste of time and money the most success i have had was having two thousand flyers printed at a cost of 45 quid and going door to door posting them myself hard work but it paid off got a good few jobs from it and the people i worked for passed on my number to friends and neighbour s and things slowly got going but still have more days with no work than i would like but i am sure that is true for most of us not sure if it was gas safe who passed on my details to the magazine though because anyone can look on the internet to check if people are really gas safe registered and as advertisers are struggling just like the rest of us they could have got our details that was cheers and good luck

I am well jealous, you were offered a better deal than me..:laugh3:

NUS Ltd are looking for a gas safe registered Engineer/Company in the NG area to cover a work load of 465 Properties incorporated in to your diary over the 2 year period of this domestic Contract.
The
Contractors Fee for the Nottingham area is a one off fee of £1830+VAT.

I like how it said;

The N Postal Code area contract is completely free to apply for and there is absolutely no fee required in order to find out more information or to be considered for the contract.

but the went on to say;

The Contractors Fee for the N postal code area is a one off fee of £1823+VAT.

So its "free" to apply but costs £1823 + VAT is your given the contract. How many people do you think they turn down? lol

I've had the same email for IM postcode. My fee would be £1813+VAT. That is cheaper than for the N postcode which proves it's a scam because everything is alot dearer on the Isle of Man than in England.

DO NOT PAY THESE SCAMMERS A PENNY!!!!!
We fell for it hook line and sinker, unfortunately before any forums for this company were in place. We were promised work in the electrical and plumbing & heating field. Nothing!!
We have paid £2k for nothing. An advertisment in our local paper would have drummed up more business.
Strange and almost funny thing (if I could laugh after loosing 2 grand) they sent us another email about 3 weeks ago, the standard email I think quite a few people have received on here saying they have work for our area. I dont think they realised we had already paid them,. When I responded saying yes sending me the names and addresses of all these properties that need work doing I got no reply from them (suprise suprise).
Its hard enough trying to keep afloat in this day and age without having these scammers taking your hard earned cash.
My hubby has fell for a few scams since setting up the business eager to make it work. The lesson I have learnt is if they call you dont bother with them. If you want work/advertising look your self.
* and i do think the imput from the bathroom guy on here is working for NUS. Just my opinion!

And here's another one doing the rounds....

My name is Fran Hart and I am a Contract Liaison Consultant for MTM Group UK, we are leading the way in Multitrade Maintenance contracts throughout the UK. I have been tasked with securing a contractor, company or individual for the Romford area.
We are looking for a company who can effectively be responsible for the ongoing maintenance over the next 30 months of domestic rental properties and refurbishments.
I have been speaking to companies for the last few days now with a view to confirming suitability for the work within the Contract. Would this be something that you may be able to accommodate. All the contract details that you would require are detailed below, also I have attached a hyper link to our website to allow you to see what we do as a company if you have any further questions or queries please don’t hesitate to contact myself directly on the details below or a member of our highly trained team who will be able to deal with your enquiry quickly and efficiently.

Many Thanks
Fran Hart

Here was my reply to them.

Unfortunately having done the simplest checks on MTM, via both whois and companies house so far you have not filed any company accounts since incorporation, you have various addresses listed and your website has no web presence and your initial email has too much waffle in it for an introduction, As for your testimonials, there not exactly the best are they? C2C have been disolved and restarted, james handyman services could be anyone in the country called james so all in all it looks like and smells like a scam….

I'm still waiting for a reply........

Finally if you Google the address listed on their website you will find the only people trading at the property will be either local government type organisations or mental health / mediation groups..........

Ho look they are base'd in Scotland to ! why is that ? Is there some loophole in Scotish law that lets them run these Scam's ?? No mention of an up-front payment in there email, wounder if it's the same amount as NUS, may just email them to see what they come up with.

I posted on another forum regarding NUS on here a year ago and there seems to be so many people that have fell foul to these Nasty (to put it nicely!) people. I think we need to get together and contact Trading Standards as a group of businesses.
I have dug out some old paperwork and found emails from another company that tried to con us out of £1495 - Worldwide Marketing Solutions. My husband agreed to a 30 day trial, we phoned them to say it wasnt working for us and they continued to charge us. Luckly there were no funds in the account so they couldnt take the money. They just billed us for £1495, threatening court action. They couldnt provide any evidence we had agreed to continue marketing with them and when I asked for a copy of the call they kept referring to they told me if i paid £495b to settle they would send me the call! Thankfully I stood by my guns even though they were threatening court action. Just kept saying see you in court then. They soon went away!
It makes me so mad there are so many companies out there making false promises and its the innocent hard working folk that are losing out!

CONTRACT DECISION DATE: MONDAY 2[SUP]ND[/SUP] JULY 2012
Hi my name is James Steven from MTM Group UK, I have been speaking to companies within the area over the last 10 days or so with reference to the maintenance contract, there has been previous information sent out. We will be implementing a company on Monday the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] of July 2012. If you would like to be considered for the contract or would like some further information if you give me a call or fill in the online contractor application form, myself or a member of my team will get back to you shortly.
A draft contract and references will be supplied to all interested parties that meet the contractual criteria requirements.
Many Thanks
James

Maintenance Contract Details
The portfolios of properties are provided by a number of our clients and they cover the area in and around North West London. We do not wish to have in place a company who resides out with this area as this would lead to delays in reaching jobs, excessive traveling and costs and of course commitment levels will wane as the Contract could take the company away from their existing customer base.
The following areas are part of the requirements to be covered: HA and surrounding

There may be opportunities out with these locations for further works and this can be considered at a later date. If a company can cover further afield then we would look at this after the initial Contract has been allocated.

We currently have just over 480 properties located within the North West London area although we do have the scope to increase this beyond the 750 mark. These range from Domestic rentals, Student accommodation lets and Void properties (provided by Banking Clients and Insurance Companies) we are looking for a company that is in a position to expand and grow and we would hope to provide further properties to that company throughout the Contract. Inevitably there may be no further room within your business and we would then look to take on a further company within the area to accommodate the extra workload.
Client Requirements
We have been asked, as part of our Contractual agreements to fulfill all maintenance requirements on our client’s properties.
Ultimately we require providing trades to cover anything from planned maintenance, emergency repairs, periodic inspections, refurbishments etc.
The range of specific duties within these provided services will include:
Plumbing Works
Gas Services
Electrical
Plastering/Rendering
Joinery
Installations
Building Works
General Domestic Maintenance

This is not a complete list and the Contract will include various other works, although not all works are mandatory for all companies installed.

MTM Group Requirements
We are specifically looking for a company covering the local area and beyond, who can be relied upon to provide these ongoing services. For the next 30 months we would be looking to install a responsible maintenance company who can provide very high customer services, and can ultimately build strong relationships with our Clients.
Not every company we speak with will be suitable and provisions can be made to accommodate companies who may be able to provide part of the requirements. We understand the volume of works may be too much for some and this can result in the area and portfolio being cut down to fit in with your individual capabilities. We would much rather each and every trade requirement is covered to the highest standard and if this results in more than one company being put in place and this is in the best interests of the Client, then we will have individual trades rather than an all in one.
Payment Terms
We believe payments should be made correctly and on time. This is paramount to the continued relationship that will be built between all parties.
We pay our Contractors strictly within 30 days. This is paid directly to the Contractor by BACS.
Contract Payment Deposit
There is a financial element to the Contract, which is applicable to the awarded contractor (and only the awarded contractor).
This allows us to have genuine commitment from our Contractor and ongoing, we have a solid base for all parties.
Our clients only wish to work with affiliated companies and we are able to effectively weed out the good and the bad from the process early on and for the Contractors they benefit from having the security of work and commitment from ourselves to fully assist throughout the Contract.
Most companies will look at the Contract as an opportunity to expand and grow their business, giving consistent work and variety in their daily diary. By having a financial commitment our Clients are ensuring Contractors turn up when they are supposed to and complete the works to the Standards required.
Example-
An example of how this is applied in other ways would be as a deposit on a rental property for instance. This is completely necessary to ensure provisions are taken place to look after the property throughout the rental agreement and both sides are protected should the other default on their responsibilities. This is something that is becoming more and more popular within the industry and over the coming months will be implemented by other national organisations to safeguard their investments.
Currently companies like B&Q and also Homebase have contractor payments in place for engineers fitting their kitchens and bathrooms supplied to customers purchasing them from their stores. The reason for this is simple “commitment”, they, like us have a reputation and a standard to adhere to, and this must be met by all parties involved to allow total competence in everything we do. I’m sure you will be able to appreciate this and also the reasoning behind it.
We also have safeguards in place and along with the guarantees within the Contract for the work; the Payment is also refunded should there be issues arising from services provided.
If you feel that you are the right company or engineer for this contract and can deliver the service requirements for our National Clients and would like to find out more regarding the Contract opportunity then please either call direct on 01294 274802 or fill in our Vendors form by clicking the link:
http://mtm-group.co.uk/form.html and a member of the contracts team will be in touch with you ASAP.

These threads rumble on but lets have it right, who the hell pays someone they've never had face to face contact with over 2 grand?! Come on. Common sense needs to play a part in decision making like this surely?!

Please take a look at the other NUS thread. Someone got their money back using their credit card protection.
