hi all just a quick one what kind of van do you all use / fits the job best
what i call a small van eg vauxhall combo swb or a lwb then high top or norm dont think that would make a big diff for plumbing it would be intressting to see what you all think say
 
I use a Transit connect. suits me just fine. means im not carrying around too much crap all the time aswell
 
peugeot expert,looovely van

can carry just the right amount of rubbish around in the back :p
 
i have a astra , pretty,but small and it has had problems,our main installation van is a low roof transit
 
ok so looks so looks like most drive swb or the small vans with the small one how easy do you find it when it comes to puttting pipes baths other big things like that as well as tools

gas man i am not supprised that you have had probs with you vauxhall i have had probs with every one i have had (corsa,astra,vrectra,) had all the same probs with the astra as i did with the vrectra found out after vaxuhall use the same engines in both

joe and wnjswozo have citroen improved as they always were never that good ?
 
Have a lockable pipe rack for tube

Baths go on roof rack,any big orders get delivered as delivery service from merchants has improved a lot now
As long as you do not use big boys,then one delivery can quite easily turn to three of four,with bits to follow,missing ect :(

I have a false floor in back about 350 mm heigh,so boxes can go under floor,leaving top clear for boilers and larger parts, works a treat :D
 
i must say that i have never seen a bath on the roof of a van would be a sight i like your sound of your false floor

have to agree the astra has been very unreliable mine as had a rad(aircon rad rubbed a hole in it) diesel pump ecu and a air flow meter
 
same as the ecu light would keep coming on then go into limp home mode had new rads and and the petrol pump started playing up when i got rid of it

transit lwb hi top racked out tube and three peice ladder inside
thats what i have steve, allbeit the jumbo 125hp.
thinking of getting something a bit smaller tho, as it is hard to park.
looking at all sorts at the mo' but t.b.h proberbly be another tranny.:confused:
 
Vauxhall Vivaro SWB with pipe tube/roof rack and shelving/compartments fitted to suit by me and my mate.
 
i want a vivaro - got a parnter at the moment - dont want a massive van... but the partner is on the small side lol
 
Defender 110. Need it for getting to some of my customers on the moors! Got loads of extra work in the bad weather when other plumbers transits couldn't get about in the snow.

Estate cars seem to be popular round here for the boiler guys.

I've given up with Land Rovers - too unreliable.

Got a Land Cruiser now (as well as van) and it goes anywhere. To quote from Top Gear ... "Not for nothing is this vehicle the choice for the Taleban."
 
true the Land Cruisers are good but if any thing gos wrong you need very small hands and will have a very empty wallet at the end of the day
but with the landys you can get your tool kit out and fix it and lots of speer parts for them to (but i dont like toyotas ) and i like brakes as standard :rolleyes:
 
mercedes vito 639,shes done me proud,now upto 193000mls and still drives sweet as a nut,only downfall is the rusty bits,but its reliability that counts in my book.:cool:
 
with the price of fuel going up so quick ill be swapping my little kangoo for a smart car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
fuel is getting a bit silly, ive got a vivario nice vans
don,t you mean ridiculas,i,m just gad i run a diesel,tax has already gone up from the reminder i had a week ago,what next?running costs of my vito are in comparison to a mid saloon so i will stick with her,a :cool:good service and i have no complaints
 
i have a fiat doblo very good size for a small van bought for 2,500 after 2 months though fuel pump went cost 1,865 pounds for new one very unlucky
 
definatley need a van big enough to carry yer gear I recently down graded from a long wheel base semi high top transit, to a ford escort, bad bad bad move, now considering an artic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
I satrted off a couple of years ago with a peugeot expert but found it was just a bit too small for me at the time so now have a swb med roof transit. Have made racking on both sides, have a pipe tube on the roof. It's plenty big enough for what I do (mainly bathroom fits)
 
big harben jetter/cctv in a 350 transit, 3008 jetter in 280 transit, odd job/labours van VX astra.

cant complain about any of the transits, both been fantastic.

astra on the other hand is a pain in the bum. is had EGR/ECU/airflow/pump. i had an old escort 75 before the astra and it was alot better although sluggish.

the astra (after spending ÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁ) is going away to a transit connect very soon.

The EGR valve on the Astra is a moving part which is subjected to a lot of use. It is only expected to last for about 50,000 miles max so if you left it longer it would have caused the throttle to be sluggish, causing reduced fuel economy as it would have started to wear out.
 
I have a LWB vivaro which i got at a steal.Bought it this time last year,6500 miles on it, 58 plate......ÂŁ8995 plus.The van was mint.

Anyway, went for the vivaro as I didnt like the drive and feel of the tranny.Expert/dispatch/scudo felt too small.Got all my gear in the back, on custom built wooden racking, as I cant stand having to move stuff out of the way to get to stuff.And the good thing with the LWB is that I can get a full bathroom suite and boiler in there( as I did the other day), and still room left for sheets of ply/plasterboard etc.

Great vans.

I've a towbar and horse trailer if I need to take 3 bathrooms at once ...

going to be starting out on my own soon and just bought myself an escort van, needs abit of work but nothing major just a service. cost me ÂŁ260 bargain. it may be abit small but ideal for me starting off and trying to keep costs down.
 
My first van was a escort,days before the overhead cam and electronic distributor ,great van,think I paid more for mine back then,had two newer type and both engines let me down,probably why not so many about now
But fingers crossed yours will last you well :)

ye should be alright, its not to bad for me as mechanics is my hobby so if anything goes wrong i can fix it myself, its not my first escort van ive owned my last one had a turbo deisal engine fitted from the escort car, makes them alot better but use alot more fuel.

my covered trailer is on the business, but funnily enough it can carry two horses behind the wifes discovery, people dont half give you a funny look when you roll up and get the gear out, although at a push you can get a bath on top of a kangoo, and the rest inside, but dont be taking corners to fast:eek:

got no horse, but sometimes the wifes a bit of a nag, does this count?
 
Ive got 2 at present, but those in charge (wife and youngest daughter want more!!!!!!!!!!) better get some more quotes turned into jobs then. still the discovery allowed me to get out and work inthe recent snow, and if diesel goes up in price any more I'll be saddling up to go to work lol

certainly to start with, the escort van is a good bet - as long as the appearance is good, nice paint - alli pipe and ladders on roof etc - have to agree with Ben C - picked one up cheap - kept it nice, and its still working hard!, with minimal mech costs and fuel not bad in this climate either - but i mostly do fix/mainainance plumbing at the moment and the occaisional bath/wet room, so couldnt justify a big van - id love one of those mitubishi L200 trucks, or new transit, but dont want to appear expensive to prospective customers (oh, as well as cant afford one at the moment ha ha) - but seriously mate, your van is your shop window, so get a nice one!! and make it look busy!! - happy hunting, moore

Judging by some of the install that I have seen of late, I think the people that fitted those boilers, turned up on horses wearing stetsons!!!:):)
