Soldering

Now then, I fixed a leaky pipe, ch, leak was a hole in pipe about a meter from the valve in rad. I drained down, cut pipe & soldered a new piece of pipe in. Filled up all ok (makes a change).

So, my mate whos a gas engineer said I should never solder that close to a valve without taking the pipe out if the valve.

Any comments?

I know if there's a rubber washer in a fitting, say a drain cock you should remove the rubber & then solder.

i have wondered if you should solder next to TRV's some time. but i always do anyway and it never seems to cause a problem.

one thing to look out for is if the pipe goes into a wall to check it doesn't move about to the extent the suggests pushfit very close by

tbh ive done it within 2 inches (push fit) was close but fine

it was a bit of a bum squeaker but had much worse just set torch to low and plodded on

I virtually never solder near any valves. Usually no need to anyhow.
Solder out of place or remove valve temporarily where possible.
Obviously a gate valve wouldn't matter if it got a fair amount of heat.

If in doubt just wrap a damp cloth round, takes 5 seconds.

i cant see any problem with it, ive soldered right next to valves all the time, every boiler i fit,
although i try to avoid if possible but ive never had a problem, just open the valve if possible and put a wet rag on it straight away
