I like the sound of this!!!

A digital clock which the installer programs his contact details into. Then ten months down the line and every year thereafter it prompts the custard to book a service.

If its not serviced by the 12 month mark it limits boiler output to 20 degrees :D

Kinda forces them to get a service. Only the installer can unlock it as he programs a pin number in.

Only pitfall i can see is whether anything made by salus will last the 12 months

Honeywell and drayton already have such things available, never used them, I know the honey well one you can set to shut down boiler completely after whatever time you specify.

My Vaillant controller tells me (the CUSTOMER) when the service is due and the GSR's phone number.

But if he is no longer alive and only he knows the pin, what then?

PS I know my pin.

Manufacturers will have a reset code just in case an installer dies or ignores the annoying customers

open for exploitation, customer will think only the installer can unlock it,he could charge whatever he wanted to do a service,he'd have them over a barrel

If it means more people get an invaluable service and safety check on what can potentially be a deadly appliance im all for it.

If I as a customer had my heating / water control restricted by a device programmed without my knowledge and agreement, it would be off the wall and in the dustbin the moment it flashed up the installers name.

And they wouldn't be getting any of my business again.

If it just flashed up a reminder that could be reset by anyone, that wouldn't be problem.

What next, your car is restricted to 30mph if you don't go back for a service.

Mot for vehicles is mandatory. Service for boilers should be! Anything that improves the take up of essential service and safety checks is a step in the right direction imo

I think these are more aimed at landlords and rental properties, where tenants don't always let us in to carry out CP12 checks.

Tenants are more likely to let you in if their boiler doesn't work.

I can't see this being allowed in private properties, especially without permission and whilst they are not legally obliged to have a service done.

write your pin down please

I'd have no problem if it was mandatory for boiler manufacturers to fit a reminder and lock out which could only be lifted by a GSR contacting them at the time of service.

I would be slightly miffed tho' as I'm Commercial GSR and I'd have to pay for a domestic GSR to carry out my service..

Whilst they are available they are very much aimed at large landlords (think housing associations) where they have a duty of care to service the boiler and carry out safety checks, anyone who has done work in this sector will be able to vouch for the fact that the tennants aren't that bothered if it means going out there way to be around to let you in (unless the thing isn't working!)

oh and the honeywell rep mentioned the other day that if you loose/ forget the pin to there timers you have to throw the thing away and replace as there is no other way of resetting it!
