Cold weather causing noisy pipes

Hi all, since the snow in december, i have had a lot of customers who say that they are getting a noise when they are using hot or cold water.

Now i am obviously thinking water hammer, vibration or faulty valves but has anybody got any other ideas as to the reason for this.

Now i do not think it is water hammer, vibration or faulty valves as it has only started occuring since october when we had snow.

My theory is that the pipes are very cold and when hot water/ mains water at 1 degree celsius or above is going through the pipes, the pipes are expanding and vibrating a lot.

I do not want to charge the customers loads of money to find out that nothing has fixed it. And i do not want to rip half the house up just to find out that it is caused by the cold weather. although it is happening even after the pipes have warmed up.

I wonder if the pipes froze and expanded and popped out of the pipe clips?

Odd one and I can understand you not wanting to charge loads and rip their house to shreds. Hope others give some other (rather better) theories.

excellent theory, but if thats the case, anybody with the open type clips are likely to get this problem, meaning a lot of ripping up floor boards and placing new clips
