I was called to quote on a new boiler as BG had told a 91 year old man he needed a new boiler and quoted £2800 to replace a heat only boiler. When i arrived he asked if I could relight it as it had gone out again even after they had "repaired" it by replacing the thermocouple (which was new ) then they removed the electrode lead and left the pilot too short. I couldn't get it to light as you will see by the attached picture i took after removing the case and combustion cover. They had intentionally left it so it would probably go out and not be able to be re ignited , so the old guy would probably panic and get them to replace the boiler at their rip off price. I did replace the boiler and the faulty 3 port valve they didn't pick up on for £1450. 2013-09-23_171600.jpg

Im with AP on this, im 25 too, And the stuff ive learnt from age of 17 im very good at. Ive had a few older plumbers close to twice my age with over 10yrs in the trade ask me questions regarding plumbing. Hate the fact that alot of the older guys try to look down at the 'younger' ones because their knees havnt gone yet :p
Ah of course someone aged 50 with 10 years experience would only have limited knowledge if the trade dear boy, as they're certainly course cowboys. And your point is???
AP et all can talk a good game & I wish I had a quid for all the chaps like that I've come across!!

Another fine cast, my fly nearly hit that one on the nose!

my work was a higher standard when i was less experienced. Experience is not everything ;)

sometimes a fresh atitude and energy is better than an old cogger stuck in his ways.

Oh I've repeatedly stated how conservative our trade is, my good self being a very fine example of that.

it's like AA in here... that said we're getting to know each other. I've recently left BG with the hump, haven't slept so well for ages. I'm 58 and was with them for 8 years. My learning curve and experience increased rapidly due to work load. They (BG)are taking on some real junk (qualified incidentally), they are all on board for the sales and bonuses but little knowledge so I think it was incompetence rather than contrived. However, they do have some real decent and switched on Blokes too. By the way, what boilers are you fitting for £1450 mate because I just couldn't do it for that (Worcesters).

Not having a pop at anyone

Just wanted to know if you had any BG training manuals left over that you could share
The multimeter one is widely spoke about but rarely seen

Bit like that elusive cheap high quality boiler custards all heard of but can't remember make.... Mention Vokera or biasi and they think it could be one of those!

I'm really sorry mate, it's the voices! !! Actually I do have it somewhere, no more than a precis photocopied and stapled. I will dig it out, suppose it'll have to be scanned and mailed

Why would anyone need a training manual on multimeters?? Learn about Ohms Law & look for Utube videos, that's about it. Oh & buy an autorange multimeter, job done!!

How do u apply ohms law to rms ac system ? I'm sure that complex number algorithms are a tad harder to understand than a book aimed at gas fitters! V=IR isn't the only equation u need. Lenses law and power correction ? Having an auto range multi meter is not the answer! It's a bit like asking why do an fga course just buy a Kane and read the numbers!

Any testing/ measuring done by a multimeter can be learned on Utube Trudy dear boy.

Dickie, you of all people! CC'S and all that blurb.... If you are testing something then understand what ur testing. Theory is as important as practice and U tube ? Can't watch u tube when ur in some ones house? The BG book is a good idea, bill Atkinson did some really good paperback guides in the early 1990s
