Having just started self employment as a service engineer I would like to canvass the opinions of all on here regarding van choice. I currently have an aging trafic which is comfortable to drive but I spend more on repairs than I do on diesel so am looking for a replacement that will be comfortable for a tall driver (6'7") and economical/reliable.

I have a SWB med hi top transit and its been reliable so far, get 30-35mpg with roof rack in place, slightly more before it went on.

Possibly a little large for just servicing but ideal if you do the odd boiler change as you can get 3m pipe inside. I can nearly stand up inside which makes finding stuff a lot easier, if I were looking again I'd probably try and find a 2.8 or 3.0T rather than a 2.6 as i'm quite close to being fully loaded when I get a oil combi boiler on board.

Thanks for that Roger, I bought the trafic five months ago to use for trips to France, at that time self employment was not on the horizon, however I will be using it for work until I can find a suitable replacement,I am tempted by a transit as it looks to offer a similar amount of driver accommodation which is my prime consideration. If I could find a small high cube van with good leg room that would be ideal, have driven kangoo and doblo but these have issues in other areas for me personally.

Stick to the good old fords easey to get parts. I have a 9 year old Transit never had a problem always fly's througth MOT.

The only real issue with transits is rust, I always get them undersealed as soon I buy them to try and keep it at bay.
