Hi All,Ive been asked to fit a inline electrolytic scale inhibitor by a mate.i know they are meant to be fitted after the stopcock for the property and before the system branches but the poles who did the renovation to the flat removed the old one and never fitted a new stopcock! and where the water comes into the property and what the guys before did with the pipework will make it a real pig to fit one and truth be told i can see too much potential for it going wrong. So my question is if i fit it to the feed going into cold water storage tank? and will it still be as effective?
Thanks!

Electrolytic scale inhibtors are claimed to have an effect that 'does not rapidly dissipate' so can be used to treat water that will be stored in tanks.

Do these things work as well as they claim?

At least if you fit one to the tank supply then it should serve the tank and everything that comes out of it.

thats what I'm thinking, directly below the CWST he's got a solar heating HWSC so it should treat that.

When I lived/worked in a hard water area I called one of the more reputable boiler manufacturers to ask about scale inhibitor requirements for combi boilers. Tech advice was that they thought there was no difference between magnetic/electronic/combimate and that any one was as good as another. The science for the magnetic ones is well proven but the effect is temporary. As for the claimed permanence of the electronic ones, one would assume that the manufacturers of the magnetic ones would have filed a complaint with trading standards if there was nothing to back up the claims.

This is a new one on me lol, yeah i only a learner, having read a little on these things, after reading your post about where to fit the scale inhibitor i have learned something new today, everywhere i read says it need to be fitted as close to the incoming mains supply before any tee offs, not my words i just saying what i read, is there no way you can fit it m8, if not just give it a try its not gona kill anyone is it, i dont think......lol,

cheer for the little lesson..........

wouldnt mind trying if it was just a customer but its a mate and the way the poles left the pipework where i would need to put the stopcock/scale inhibitor is a mess and i can see it all ending in tears!best not to s@!t on your own doorstep!

Talked to a service engineer from one of the major boiler manufacturers this morning. Always good to learn something new. He said that the only scale reducer he has found to be effective is the aquadial unit. Apparently Which? or somesuch did one of their projects and were unable to determine whether or not the magnetic/electrolytic/RF units were or were not effective. They did not have enough evidence to commit either way.

We've fitted several different versions of scale reducers. The only ones that have caused problems were fernox quantomats. The owners would forget to top up the powder in the bowl. We had loads of calls for scaled water/water heat exchangers while we were fitting those. We've had no calls to boilers fitted with electrolytic or magnetic scale inhibitors.

Well I hope I manage to share your experience Mike. Had one with a magnetic scale up recently and I am hoping it is an abberation as I have fitted loads of these things and don't want to face a corresponding number of disgruntled customers. One trusts that the fact there has been no serious challenge from trading standards is some indication that these things are at least partially effective.

Been thinking a bit more about this. Perhaps, Mike, both experiences are valid. You have stated elsewhere that you find a Baxi more tolerant on an old system than say a WB or a Vaillant. Perhaps their plate heat exchangers are also more tolerant. I have seen older combis with no anti-scale device that have never had a problem. As flow rates and the pressure to have a more immediate response at the point of use have both increased this in turn would lead to a finer matrix allowing a greater exchange area in a given space and a lower primary water volume.

So perhaps the real answer is that the type of anti-scale device you can get away with depends partly on the boiler you are using.

I would also like to point out that the hardness of water in Reading, which is where I spoke to the engineer, is more than three times that of Hastings.

Water in Hastings is soft, it eats copper cylinders in no time. I work across all of Sussex. The boiler problems we had were in the Brighton to Bognor stretch which draws it's water from bore holes on the chalk downs.

Yeah my mates' house is in brighton and when i had my condensing boiler fitted they fitted an electrlytic scale inhibitor at the same time and said they fitted them to all boilers in the brighton area

the poles, who are they? Animals? Aliens? Whoever else?

Mate, please stop with this racial discrimination at least at public forum, ok?
If ever english chap done similar crappy job would you say "the english who did the renovation"?

Everywhere are good specialists and cowboys. There's no excuse for anybody who fouled up a job. There's no matter what nationality cowboy is. Cowboy is always cowboy...

Why do you emphasize that poles done that? Do you want to tell everybody that poles can't do the job properly, because few fools gone wrong?

Or, perhaps because polish builders are not qualified because they come from country where standard plumbing technologies are still unknown for majority of english ones? Where one stove heats up over 50 blocks of flats and supply them in hot water 24h/7? Where water pressure is described in atmospheres not bars and nobody ever heard about water pressure problem (there are problems, sometimes we have to use reducers when pressure blows a tap though), where copper pipes are not allowed for gas by regulations to increase safety, where no even single inch of lead pipe is used because of health hazzard (all of them has been removed ages ago), where no single drain pipe is visible outside building cause all of them are hidden between the walls for esthetic reasons, where is not acceptable if angle between two walls in square room is different then 90 degrees, where is not acceptable if a sheet of paper can slide between newly plastered wall and level sticked onto it, where is not acceptable if wall/floor has no level, etc. etc. I agree we have bad roads, no motorways and many more disadvantages but it's because of polish goverment composed in 80% of jewish comunists occupying the country, because through all the history gemrans used to fight with russians on our land destroying it completly and we had to start over and over again from scratch. Comunists disabled all of our factories (cars, bikes, planes) and engineers had to emigrate to avoid murder. I'm pretty sure you english even never knew about polish pilots' results in the battle of england cause in your schools no one tells about it don't know why (stop. off topic.)

I know plenty of english fellow plumbers/bilders, that used to work in polish sites and were very impressed by polish perfomance repeatidly say that they have never seen similar things. They couldn't believe how much work could be done in such a low amount of time with highest polish standards.

I work personally in many residences owned by London's millionaires, in theirs new houses where work best english builders which performing lower standard than simple builders in poland do in simple new blocks.

So, please don't blame poles because of few cowboys that did not do well in your mates house. I know that not qualified fools creates bad reputation, although it's no reason for racial discrimination and generalising the facts.

There is some useful information to read here; [DLMURL]http://www.lifescience.co.uk/domestic_technical_library[/DLMURL] particularly the university test that can be read.

so, who the Poles are that is necessary to indicate they were there, of course besides the fact that a lot of them became part of UK community forever, has written new record in UK's history and now create new UK. Better or worse? We shall see.. English goverment invited us knowingly not by a case. It wasn't new experience also as through ages many nations used to come to this country for exact reason and they still do. Thus I'd like know what is the dislike come from. This is democratic country and the goverment represents ppl who voted. Gov. does things to improve electorate's life and don't play against (as take place in still communistic-jewish controlled Poland for instance). If they decided to open horizons for other nation again to make England better why do you blame ppl who exercise the chance and became part of english community for the rest of their life instead of characters who let'em do that. I understand that you might experience bad things with some Poles and do not like that. No one perfect though, neither exact person nor whole nation. I'm impressed that english nation is so good even if the brutal murders made by english youths on polish ppl weren't true and someone just wrote about them to fill empty spaces in newspapers. In 20 years time you'll forget that someone has polish roots because he'll beave and live like english does. Culture difference will blend, it takes a time. I'm courious why you don't indicate for instance on 'muslims' as you do with Poles. They create enclave inside uk and live their quite different life, quite different culture, accept quite different own laws and don't even think to live as english do. They are the biggest ethinc minority in this country, tho nobody has ever emphasized on this (and others) forum that 'muslims' messed up some job. As I have seen they are really able to do that. I work for some time in UK and I've seen plenty of bad done job by english 'engineers' so as I mentioned no one's perfect. Instead of blame and fight with eachother exchange experiences, accept the facts and make life easier. The sooner, the better.

This is democratic country and the goverment represents ppl who voted.

Wrong! The number of people who voted for the government represented less than 50% of the population. They have failed to carry out the promises contained in their pre-election manifesto so if you voted for them on the basis of their promises you have been betrayed.

Gov. does things to improve electorate's life and don't play against (as take place in still communistic-jewish controlled Poland for instance).

Dream on! The government's main concern is to do things that help it get re-elected. That is why you get so many knee jerk reactions from them! I have lived in this country for over 50 years and overall my quality of life is worse now than it ever was.

The government's main concern is to do things that help it get re-elected.
If so, it wasn't right move cause betrayed nation would not vote again and no chance for re-election.

my quality of life is worse now than it ever was
According to economic condition of all the world besides China every country struggles as many experts compare todays situation with that in 30's in US. As they say if no right moves take a place it'll lead to even worse crisis. As I know the toughest recesion in the UK was in 1973-74. Now global situation is much more serious. Don't think imigrants are responsible of that, I can even say that they help to buoy up many businesses in the hard times.

The number of people who voted for the government represented less than 50% of the population.
Those who did not vote cannot pretend to anybody.

wow... old thread I know... but I can't help thinking how well this started, followed by a little xenophobia & an intelligently thought out & worded response... then some 'my dads' bigger than your dad' & haha look at the funny mans spelling mistakes & a really weak attempt at a political tete a tete ... & then all goes quiet....no witty retort or facts about former communist northern Europeans...haha.. this thread made me smile.:D
