Hi, I have a Rayburn 480K that has a problem with the cooker reset button (not the thermostat, I mean the orange light at the bottom). The other day I found both the Orange reset lights (cooker and heating) were on and thought I had run out of oil.

On checking I found the oil low but still above the refill level. I then reset the 2 resets but about 20 mins later the cooker one came back on - at this point it couldn't be reset, just kept coming on after about 20 seconds. It might be worth noting that the cooker heated during the 20 mins up to approx 75% temperature.

The next day, tried it again and it stayed on just for 20 mins and again after that time couldn't be reset. Next day ran for 20 mins etc etc you get the picture. A plumber friend replaced the actual reset button but it still is behaving the same way. Anyone any idea what might the problem?

Many thanks,

Biffo

It sounds like a thermostat problem. Also, has it been serviced in the last 3-4 years?

How old is it? I ask because there's a fault where the insides warp and heat leaks from the cooker side to the heating side. This is hugely expensive to repair as you can probably imagine as it means taking the machine out, taking most of it to pieces, repairing it if possible then re-installing it. This is a fault on the older models (over say 15 years old) but in fairness to Rayburn I think much of it depends on how well they've been serviced and maintained over the years.

To be honest, I don't think you'll find a knowledgeable enough reply here as they're quite specialised machines. If you phone Aga-Rayburn they should be able to give you a short list of local chappies to help you. Don't be frightened to ask what their call out charges are! Some are really good value, some are expensive.

Thanks Dontknowitall,

I am not sure how old it is, was in the house when we moved in 8 years ago, if it is any indication it uses Nu Way burners. Anyway, am going to do exactly what you said, get a "local chappie" in. Have had good advice from another forum and coupled with your advice tells me that this is too big a job for me!

Appreciate your input,

Biffo.

Thanks for the appreciation. Hopefully it's something cheap and simple like a dirty oil filter.

hi . wonder if anyone can help

Ive got a 480k mkII oil rayburn , its recently had new cooker liners and a baffle plate . It all fires up ok but the control panel is getting pretty hot from the cooker running and knocks out the boiler thermostat button . Any pointers ? It didnt do this prior to the new parts being fitted , cheers

Sounds like the main cast iron wall between the cooker and burners has cracked, I'm afraid. (Happened to ours.)

If you take the baffles out and have a good look down the side you'll see the crack near the bottom, if there is a crack. As I understand it, the Mark I, II and III are not going to last forever due to this fault. Crack usually appears from 12 years onwards.

Sorry to be gloomy about this.

thanks for that its only made eleven years ! , i ll take a look next time im at the property , unfortunately its in the middle of nowhere and rented ! wont be the easiest item to replace . Probably have go for an external oil boiler and dreaded electric range if its as terminal as that . A real shame as its in good nick and has had loads of spare parts . May well be breaking it for spares in the future , watch this space
