it kept creating that horrible sound each night...

It's more likely to be a ceramic cartridge as it looks like a quarter turn tap. If you know the make of the tap you should be able to get a replacement from the manufacturer or try tapspares online.

Defo a 1/4 turn tap,but looks like the 1 you pull to turn on,if so a new tap might be cheaper

It's a quarter turn ceramic disc tap, get a new one. Less hassle.
