Nightmare scenario - our CH system (Combi boiler) has been losing pressure and needs topping up every day. we had a CH Engineer in who said that the microbore piping used (approx 17 years old) needs replacing. He said that the older and cheaper type of piping used apparently didn't have a membrane and thus only lasts 12 years and this is the type used in our house. Is this really true - I cannot believe that trade would market a CH pipe that only lasts 12 years! given the size of the job required to replace it, and the huge cost involved in taking up all the flooring? HELP!

Any visible leaks?
whats the boiler?
Is it plastic piping?
If its non barrier then i'd say hes right.
get a second opinion

Sounds BS to me, he's too lazy to find the leak, that sort of volume should be easy to be found unless pipework goes under ground floors.
get him to check PRV is not leaking, check the charge in the pressure vessel, I bet the charge has gone leading to over pressure blowing out under heat, cooling and leaving low pressure being topped up and repeated.

If the microbore is copper then you are right but the question as to type of microbore has not yet been answered. n I'm not sure if plastic type microbore was common 17 years ago.
