Discuss Loud noise and vibration when hot water is used in the Central Heating Forum area at PlumbersForums.net

Recently over the past 2 months, the boiler or area by the water tank has started making a loud groaning noise whenever hot water has been running for much over a minute (sometimes less). Since the weather has gotten cooler, the radiators seem to come on (unless turned off at the TRV) whenever a relatively large quantity of hot water is used at the taps. This is despite the thermostat for the radiators being turned all the way down, so they shouldn’t even be coming on at all at the moment. This can get rather annoying on mild days if someone has a late shower which causes the radiators to come on unless they are turned off at the TRV. This wasn’t the case before the boiler / hot water tank started making this sound.

We have also had a powerflush done by british gas over 9 months ago to clean out the system as the water was rather brown as well as having a lot of heating noise such as clicking and banging as the pipes warm up and cool down.
This is the filter that british gas added ( I don't think this should be related to the issue)

The pipes still made a lot of noise after this took place, but it did at least clean the system. However, just recently, the boiler is now far louder than it used to be and the noise and vibration seems to travel throughout several of the pipes in the house as well as other clicks and bangs. We are not able to control the heating as we used to so we think there must be some issue.

This below is our hot water cylinder. In the first few seconds of this clip, you hear what always seems to happen virtually as soon as the hot tap begins to run. The pipes presumably start expanding. Some seem to be very loud bangs. This has also only been the case in the past 2 months or so. The chugging and hissing sound at 00:13 is normal and our old boiler also did this. The noise at 00:35 however is what is worrying. It is really loud and vibrates all of the pipes in the house.

While the hissing in this clip is normal, the groaning noise in the background isn't, and at 00:07 is where the awfully loud noise starts. It seems that turning the hot tap off after use causes this, but I can't understand the reason behind it as it never used to be this way. It results in things like the washing up being done making all the radiators in the house making this awful noise multiple times, though luckily not quite as loud.

While I don't know if this is related to the issue as the heating is not turned on at the thermostat, this seems to be below 1 the entire time, even when we use hot water which triggers the radiators to come on. It was mentioned on another thread that this ideally wants to be at 1 rather than 0.8 when off and 1.5 when on (or something along similar lines.

We had both our boiler and hot water cylinder replaced by 0800 repair back in June 2020 and have had the power flush done after by british gas. 0800 repair told us that the hot water is now separate from the heating, which did seem to be the case up until recently, but I don't understand how just in the past 2 months, it seems that radiators come on just by running hot water.

We have had nearly 10 visits from these two businesses combined, but given the noise and heating control issues we are having, something is clearly not right.

I may as well link the other thread I started ages back regarding a very similar problem that was related to the original install. There is a lot more information here about our boiler and other parts of the system.

Sorry for so many lengthy posts, but I want to ask for advice here before I contact anyone again as no matter how many times we have had people round (and spending a lot of money), the noise and heating problems are still here, and in areas as shown in this thread, are getting even worse.

Would much appreciate some help!
