Hi, partner's daughter, who lives in Dunfermline, Fife, a soft water area, has been having a problem with the filter on the hot water input side on her shower mixer becoming clogged with what she has called "limescale". The substance is white and hard but I have not had the chance to see it for myself since a friend of hers " had a look" and removed the filter ! She has lived in the house for a year and the problem has only recently appeared. She has had a new boiler installed six months ago and it has been suggested that the fitter has reversed the polarity on "something" and this has caused a reaction which has resulted in this "crud" forming! This seems to me a bit strange and I would appreciate any assistance you can offer
regards

Unless my geography is well off parts of Dunfermline are right on the cusp of hard water??

Surely ANY amount of dissolved salts in the water will leave a deposit when the water evaporates? So even in a 'soft' water area, I would expect a showerhead to need descaling. On the other hand, I can't see how the inlet of a shower would suffer significant limescale even in a hard water area as there is no evaporation or heating taking place at this point.

If the "Polarity Reversal" is just water is now flowing in the opposite direction in a pipe, it may be that depsoits have been disturbed.

Water supplies can contain varying degrees of particulate matter such as rust, clay, very fine sand, etc. If this is the cause, it will usually also build up at the bottom of cisterns. The filter is there to protect against this and should be replaced.

Ah, I get it. You mean it's built up on the inlet filter. That makes sense now, thanks.

Thank gawd you edited it Rob. I had visions of mumsnetters from all around the world decending on this forum all up in arms about using chemicals that would harm their babies. We would be outnumbered 1000:1 and would need a police escort to change a tap washer! :D:D:D

It is brilliant stuff but doesn't taste very nice, rinse it several times, then rinse it again - oh go on once more for luck, then enjoy a lovely scum free cuppa. You've earned it, and you'll have to do it all again in a few weeks...

Hello, I am seeking some advice, I have a POTTERTON PROMAX 28 COMBI Boiler and I noticed yesterday that the water around the house is no longer warming up. The heat exchanger has been changed 6 months ago, so I do not believe it is that. Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Thanks

The fittings below are for a mixer bar attached to a self contained shower. i.e not a wall. The attaching screws have snapped. I could get two new brackets, dismantle that existing one and start again or I could try and re attach via those screws, removing the broken ones from the plate and wall...

Hi, Can anyone advise as to why the cold water to my bathroom keeps airlocking? This originally happened about 12 months ago and has happened 3-4 times since. It’s an upstairs bathroom, fed from a tank in the attic. The tank is about 8 Meters away and feeds a bath, sink and toilet. The tank...
