Discuss Frequent sound of water being drawn when nothing is on in the USA area at PlumbersForums.net

We live in a 200+ year old house and - over the past couple of days - a noise has started on a regular basis from our water pipes. It sounds like water is being drawn, but there are no taps on and no toilets are refilling, etc. It lasts for 2-3 seconds every few minutes (the interval between varies a little).

We can't trace where it coming from - no dripping/running taps and no faulty cisterns that are constantly refilling (that we can rell). There is also a water hammer noise at the end, so water obviously flowing under pressure when it happens. Any ideas, please?

Do you have a water meter fitted ? you could monitor the water usage overnight if it shows a movement then there's leakage some where? do you have a unvented cylinder ?? It could be a safety device operating when water is heated ? More information is need of what type of system you have and few pictures may help . Regards kop

Have you got any near neighbours?
Is the water service shared with adjoining neighbours?

It may be noise transmitted from water usage nearby.
Or it may be a leak underground outside which is opening up under pressure then closing as the pressure reduces. possibly from a previously capped off supply to an outside toilet or tap or outhouse.

Do you have a water meter at the street stop tap by any chance, is so turn off the stop tap inside and watch the meter.
