Drilling granite

It has suddenly become my lot to drill flue and pipe holes in granite stone walls. Like 15" thick granite stone walls. Has anyone found any method/tool that does better than any other? Semtex is NOT an option.

Would the diamond tiped bits be no use? The same kind used for tiles..

diamond drilling is the norm for something that hard and thick you may need to get a professional company in with the proper rig

Diamond tipped core drill but it will take you ages and you need to measure the loss on the cutting tips and charge accordingly.

Tile drill not heavy enough.

If you can pump water onto it, it will be quicker and your tip will last longer

need more than one core for granite, best bet to get in a proffessional with a drill stand to do the job. granite will destroy a normal drilling system used by your average plumber, plus your arms will fall off before you get through the wall. How do I know, me house is built of stone and rubble with a brick facing, the walls are 24" thick and ive worn out numerous core drills and cores when i turned the building into flats, and ive arms like an orangutang now. I got in a man with a water cooled core drill in the end and it worked out cheaper than a drill and 4"core.

I rather thought that this would be the answer. I am the other side of the A30 to you but I guess the stone is much the same. I have a couple of jobs on the books that need granite drilling so perhaps I could save money and get them both done the same day.

Hire a cornishman for the day and pay him with pasties, those guys go through Granite, like a bangcock lady boy going through yer wallet!!!

Sorry our core bits are 32mm deep only and for use on granite worktops to a depth of 30mm.

Not much good for you.

As I have always said you have to try everything at least once, so yes I have used many Cornishmen to go through granite!!!!!

getting professionals in to do it with the water cooling cores, doesnt that create alot of muck and mess ? I've seen them used on sites but in a customers house you'd probably need to cover everything around it lol

1 .Insert a core drilling bit into your drill motor. Do not use a masonry bit. They are not strong enough to adequately drill through granite.


2 .Place a white bottle cap--one you would find on a medicine bottle--over the area on the granite where you will drill. The cap opening must face up.


3.Press a plumber's putty around the base of the medicine cap. The putty will hold the cap in place and form a damn around the cap.


4. Pour any type of oil into the cap up to 1/4 inch from the top. The putty will keep the oil from leaking out onto the granite.

5.Position the drill bit inside the cap with oil and begin to drill. Let the drill spin for 10 seconds, then allow the drill to sit in the oil and cool down for 10 seconds.

6.Continue drilling for 10 seconds and cooling down for 10 seconds. Alternate the procedure until you've drilled through the granite.
