Big And

I have recently had a combi boiler installed and am having a number of problems, which are slowly being resolved. I am trying to be a patent and understanding as possible, but have just been up into the loft to put some things into storage and have found the 5m (2.5m vertical 2.5m horizontal) flue running at non uniform angles and being supported by one bracket and string, the joints are wrapped in a silver tape which also seems to have been used to provide support as well. I be grateful if you could look at the pictures below and provide feedback as to whether you think the flue installation is safe or as the flue is so poor I ought to be concerned about the whole installation.

oh my god what the hell is that i would stop using your boiler immediately that looks very dangerous

For a recently installed installation, that's not good. What boiler is it?

That is AR at best. No support. Get the installer back out and tell them you want proper supports fitting as it the regs. The tape might be doing nothing, the flue will probably be held together anyway, but as most flues are now push fit, the need for proper support is even more so. Tape is not sufficient.

Turn your boiler off mate. Without being there myself I would tell you to turn it off. Get another GSE to check it over, the flue may well be working fine but it still poses a danger as its not supported properly plus that closure plate may be the only seal the flue has. This is a joke to be honest you've been treated badly by possibly having a death trap fitted in your home.

do any boilers on the market today require tape to seal the flues?? only one i no is telscopic flue by worcester! nothing like that its horrendous! and unclipped aswell!!! ID imo

look at the first pic? that doesnt look like a 45 or 90 to me, has he made a DIY bend out of closure tape! please some one tell me im wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not one for reporting people as I think most things can be sorted with a quick phone call to the offender but luckily I have never come across anything reportable. But in this case I would definately report this cowboy, he has seriously endangered your life.

I think you may be right, looks like its just been taped and bend to suit.

I posted a couple of weeks ago about boiler choice and on the recommendation of the installer went for a glowworm ultracom2 30cxi. Have had a few niggles which the installer has put down to the boiler, Glowworm have been brilliant sent a engineer the next day who said it was an installation issue, the installer has obviously not been so good.

if that is the case! the culprit deserve jail! thats is totally joke, i hope thats not the case! and it just looks alot worse than it is! but imo that would win the free anton in gas safe mag!

The gloworm engineer should have picked this up aswell surely.

Definately! this bloke should be stopped right away, just imagine what else could be wrong on the system and what other states he has left behind him in the past.

You know what, looking at it again, I think you guys might be right about that first picture, it looks more than 45. I was thinking that the installer has just used the tape to stop the joints falling apart if they are push fit, but that joint doesn't look like an elbow. Either way though, tape shouldn't be used to secure it.

Exactly! I would have disconnected the boiler and called the pigs!! The flue is probably too long, No tape is allowed on ANY flue unless specified in M.I's, virtually unsupported, probably a soil fitting under all the ducttape as well! I would have Gas safe out first thing tomorrow and get the dogsnob locked up. Oh and open a window or 2 till you get it sorted!

my question is how long has this been like this, what other problems did you have was the boy gas safe do you have his gas save number and hope your dont mind me asking how much did he charge you

Thanks everyone for your prompt responses, I have turned off the boiler and before you ask the installer and company where both on the gas safe register. I'm not one for reporting people either as anyone can make a mistake; but will sleep on it overnight and decide in the morning

i predict the problems with the boiler due to the flue gases mixing with inlet,!!! :) due to DIY 70 degree bend or what ever it is, Has a proper vertical flue termination been fitted?

sorry buddie not report any one, your willing to let some one attempt to kill you and your family, there are putting lifes at risk

Honestly mate, get Gas safe out first thing. We all make mistakes but this is criminal!

there are no bends in that installation, it is extensions taped together by tape, what a complete joke. Keep the engineers details, arrange a free inspection from gas safe and get gas safe out to have a look and pass on engineers details to them, also turn off your boiler and don't use it until it is seen to.

This is not a mistake mate, its attempted murder imho

I think a GSE needs to check it out first, we could be making assumptions about the bends and the tape has just been used as support/keeping them together as an additional means.

i doubt the engineer is GSR or i hope he isnt! incompetence is better than some one knowing the law and just blatently being a cowboy to the biggest extreme!!!

OMG!
this guy is not registered is he?.

ideal engineer at fault too for working on boiler and not inspecting installation on completion.

no bends on there just 'cut n shut'.

riddor reportable and i.d for innadequate flue system.

get hold of john wayne and gas safe now!!!!.

i will advise free of charge if your in my area, where is the installation?.op??

I've not worked on these newer Glowworm boilers before but I've heard they are similar to Vaillants.

If so are the flues the same? If they are then it should have the proper brackets on and be screwed. So why the need for tape if he has done that properly? Has he not clamped it properly?

We run a community village hall and have a large kitchen provided for the use of hirers. This includes a Lincat SLR9 gas cooker which I believe is a 23.8Kw appliance with all six burners and oven on max. This was installed some 10 years ago and has passed all subsequent Gas Safety inspections as...

We are from Alberta, and I own an electrical company. I have been asked by a BC Mechanical P. Eng. to install an emergency STOP button at the man-door to the boiler room. It's intent is to 'halt' the operation of the boilers in the room should there be an emergency. He is demanding that I do...
