Oil course to get qualified.

Hi guys,

Was thinking of doing my oil course.

I’ve done a few boiler installs but had them signed off by a guy I know who’s oftec but now thinking I wouldn’t mind getting qualified and registered myself.

Local training centre says course is 4-5days training and exam etc.

Now I know I’ve only done a few installs so would the 4-5 training really teach me enough? I know breakdowns will be a long way off but was thinking more installs to start off .

Is there more courses I can go on to enhance my knowledge with oil etc.

Just stay as you are. Oftec is a waste of space. I won't be renewing mine.

Get somebody else or add in the cost for building control to sign it off.

I cannot see how 4-5 days will teach you very much in all honesty.
What qualifications do you have now for Oil? Do you have any at all?

No quals in oil just gas quals.

Hard to judge how much work I would get from oil and not currently advertising as I can’t really with not being qualified. Just thought would be another string to the old bow.

But I understand I won’t come out after 4-5 days a expert.

You can do the theory and a small amount of 'fictitious' fault finding and practical at college but the experience you need you can only gain through working on something regularly with someone who has a wealth of experience. That's were the old apprenticeship of five years worked well, in addition to working as part of a team in the following years.
Things have changed.

In my opinion, your best bet is to work with someone on oil for a while. It is a different kettle of fish to Gas.

As far as volume of work is concerned, if you're out in the sticks, there will be more. If you're based in a town, not as much. You also need to think that most people who have Oil Boilers will more than likely already have someone they use and they will be loyal. Oil Engineers who are Good and experienced are worth their weight in Gold and are hard to find, particularly nearer to towns.

I was talking about my area. There's work in the sticks for Oil near me but very little in towns as it's mostly Gas.
I know there's a lot in Ireland.
I suppose it depends where he is based.

Every time i go to a new customer. Looks like it's been fitted by stevie Wonder. No documentation. No nothing. Every tom dick and Harriet with an a$$ hole doing oil work.

Not registered. So oftec not interested. Yet I miss a clip on an oil line and it's like the Salem witch trials.

I agree, - OFTEC is a joke.
I see houses being sold and the oil work and other heating work is a disgrace and so obviously wrong, yet nobody is held responsible.

The week long course and exam is more about teaching you how to navigate the OFTEC books and find the stuff you need to know. If you're already Gas I think you should manage ok.
