Hi, I am a gas engineer working in the torbay area. I have been installing a new central heating system and had to resite the old boiler. Its a worchester 28i junior greenstar.

I have been told that the fan is prone to blowing when power is reinstated to the appliance. I spoke to the merchants as a general question, Have you sold many greenstar fans? the reply was " yes, thousands of them".

I have just finished the system today but going back tomorrow to fill the system and switch it on ' hope the fan doesnt blow !!!!!!!! I will let the customer know prior to switching it on that it is a common fault and what could happen. !!!!

has anyone else had this problem and is there anyway around it?

get a voltage dimmer and drip feed the 240v in ?

yeah ive never heard of this problem before, people turn boilers on and off all the time..

i know what ya mean though, my own boiler went off because of turning it on and off at the wall and so has my old tv..

ive just contradicted my self

Thanks mickie, Im just dreading the fan blowing and the custard saying " it was working fine before you took it off the wall".

I'm not the best gas engineer by far but work with alot and they all say same worcesters are junk , common faults are in first five years ,prv, fan, expansion vessel, pcb and pump .Thats what they all say and most are ex bg engineers old school guys and seem to know there stuff.

have to not warned your customer that problems can occur when moving exsisting appliances? it would have been one of thew first things i would have said, if something does fail there aint much you can do.... but a prewarned customer is alot easier to get your money out of then one that feels upset and looking to blame you for a problem.

ive only found this problem on the 2008 and 2009 fans, i dont know if thats just my experience or if anyone else has noticed

i have had 2 fans go on two boilers side by side , bosch said it was an electrical spike that takes the fan out ,they cost around ÂŁ150 or 180 new, people have been kicking up about the price and they have reduced it , a mate worked for them and he said they are a nightmare and have a mind of their own so good luck

Thankyou for your reply, The boiler I am dealing with is 3 years old, All went well today though, Boiler working fine. but through past experiences, I know the fan is prone to failer.

wait until it goes then get the customer to take out a BG contract ,happy days

We've fitted well over 150 Worcesters in the last 6 years and haven't had a problem with a fan yet. The only problem I've come across is due to poorly maintained boilers.

On the flip side about 4 Vaillants in that period and 2 have given us horrendous problems.

We are from Alberta, and I own an electrical company. I have been asked by a BC Mechanical P. Eng. to install an emergency STOP button at the man-door to the boiler room. It's intent is to 'halt' the operation of the boilers in the room should there be an emergency. He is demanding that I do...
