i have got to change over a w plan system. If it was just changing to a Y plan, is it just a case of ptting in the new mid position valve and running a hot water off? Or, would you recommend changing it to an S plan?

I always go s plan. Y plan is for 1980's fit a balancing locksheild type gate valve on bottom of cylinder. (Locksheild to prevent DIY helpers)

balancing lockshield valve? Never heard of one of those. I shall google it now. Thanks

Is there a diagram I can look at for a balancing valve on the cylinder coil?

Think of it as the equivalent of a lock shied on a radiator, lets you balance system, though its obviously not essential as there are so many systems with out.
