Hi

I am hoping for some advice or knowledge about sewer vents.

Recently I have been hearing a metallic sound in the cupboard where the vent pipe is.
The pipe is metal and runs from the bottom of house and through the roof.
The noise isn't persistent and happens sporadically.
I am wondering if it could be to do with gases passing through the pipe or could it be something that needs checking.
I can't see anything wrong with the pipe physically. It seems securely fitted.
Plus I can't say 100% that it's to do with the vent pipe as the pipes for the bathroom are in the cupboard too.

Thanks in advance

Hi

Very unlikely to be anything to do with the vent pipe if it is an old cast iron one there is not a lot to go wrong.

The reason it is used for drainage is not only is it very strong but it has very good sound deadening qualities. (you get a lot of noise from it after the flush compared to plastic which has to be insulated)

It could be rats climbing around inside which would explain why it is random they can't get out so not to worry & not a lot you can do bar tapping the pipe to give them a fright.

TBH it is more likely to be something else.

Good luck

If the pipe goes up through the roof (which it should) it could just be birds landing on the top
Could also be expansion and contraction of other pipes in the cupboard, all a complete stab in the dark without hearing it to be honest
Do you hear the noise after flushing, running the hot tap or when the heating has just been turned on?
