Hi all. Why did the guys who are self employed choose that route, rather than to work for a company?

Surely it can't just be the money?

In 2008 starting out it was the only option! You are the only one who can make it or break it.

Worked with the family business for years until we closed it down in 2006. Went to work for eagaheat until i was made redundant in November 2011. They took the mickey with the hours they wanted out of us and expected us to travel up to two hours to get to a job before working 8 hours. Looked at other firms offering work and all the local ones pay a pittance and the larger ones want you to spend half your life travelling. I've had enough of spending all my time on the road so went self employed and rarely work more than 5 miles from home.

Found as I got older the BS got bigger, young lads came through that knew how to kiss ar5e to university degree level. I felt more and more aggrieved and irritated and eventually hated going to work. Jacked it all in and worked for the best boss a man could ever have....myself.

trained in farming with help from my uncle, who was probably the best employer anyone could want, moved onto the RN for 10 years and once you have worked in a service environment, working for others outside it is very hard, due to the number of idiots out there, so only option is to go it alone and never looked back over the last 13 years :)

I moved to a new area and was expecting a drop in wages but what I was being offered was stupid (I would of been better off working in tescos stacking shelves) they also wanted 9 hours a day for the poor money. I decided to go self employed and hopefully within 2 years I can be earning what they were offering and not working 9 hours a day to get it.

Ive been self employed a few times over the years. Dodging between working for others and doing my own thing.

Dunno why really, never been the sort to spend too much time in one place Doing the same thing.

How did you all actually make the step towards going it alone??

You wake up one morning put your feet on the floor and think to yourself why am I doing this for someone else.

equally some of us woke up one morning put our feet on the floor and thought why don't I leave all this stress to someone else

just got on and done it..i dont think i could work for someone else again.i am always checking the weather forecast to see when i can get out fishing, cant do that working for a someone else

It's interesting as Iv gone the other way. I'm a spark not plumber BTW, I did 13 years self employed and the business was good for a lot of it but by the end of 2010 I was really struggling. I'd already laid off the 2 lads I had on the books just before Xmas and was getting a bit concerned , I did a lot of contract work and that just dried up, I still had bits on the go but was getting very quiet. I had an opportunity to work for a very large white goods manufacture put before me and having a young family I decided to take it.
I do miss it like hell though, I think I miss the cash work the most ;).

I do regret shutting it down as I most likely would have got through on my own. Been 4 years now and am temped to go again.

A lot of sleepless nights, a lot of am I doing the right thing! Keep telling myself why I'm working for myself and not a company. And I just jumped in feet first!

I have only been up and running since may. Not earning a living wage every week but enough to eat and pay the small bills I have. I have got stressed quite a bit but nowhere near as much as when I was employed.

The one thing I will say is though running a business isn't easy, I can do the hands on part but paperwork etc is a nightmare.
