I use the heat proof mats but I was on a job the other day and the custard had white walls. Sorry to say I made a right mess of them with flux and other marks over them. However I did touch them up afterwards as I had a tin of emulsion in the van. I may look into these as an alternative
 
I've seen them but never seen in action.

If I ever get a soldering job or any job I'll buy one!
 
Piece of stainless steel off stack of extractor hood etc, Thin enough to bend, rigid enough to stay in position and wet cloth behind for heat sink if required.
