I've not done too much 4" work - as far as I can tell the boss goes into the socket above, then a short piece of pipe with a socket fits around the bottom which goes into another socket in the ground.

I need to replace the boss and pipework underneath it going into the socket in the ground.

Can the boss slide up so I can take out the pipework below, or will I need to cut stuff out?

From what I can see it looks disastrous.
I think you'll need to cut above all that lot, cut the waste and pull it out of the socket at ground level.

Then start again with a short piece, slip coupling and strap on boss.

There may be better suggestions given but from what I can see on the pic, that sounds like the quickest way "

Ahh you can get 4" slip couplings? Cool. Sounds like a plan to me.. Cheers mate

You can do or some couplings have full socket lugs that you can knock out to make em into slip couplings, just remember to mark the pipe when you use em so you know you've pulled it back to the middle. ( you may know that )!

Just finished the job, was easier than imagined - other than the spiders nest and the woman using the washing machine after I'd cut the inch an half!!! Got the slip coupler from wicks in the end, £7..

Just a short length of 110, slip coupler and a strap boss..

Cheers for the tips guys!

Looks fab

So did you just cut it off & use the slip coupler?

Also, the strap boss, do the have rubber inserts?

Didn't even need to cut it as it was just held on by a ring.. So just disconnected the bit of pipe underneath and removed the rest, chucked some grease on the end of each pipe, put the coupling on the pipe I was adding and slipped it up.
Yup, there's a rubber in the boss.. Was easier than solvent as had to slide the inch an half into the coupling

As these threads are followed by general public may I add, usually a strap on boss has a top side giving a slight fall on the connection to 110mm pipe and for a leak free solvent weld, boss to pipe, cleanliness is essential. Handling pipe with greasy fingers can effect solvent weld and live connections make matters worse. Usually I clean with acetone to avoid call backs.

Hi, Can anyone advise as to why the cold water to my bathroom keeps airlocking? This originally happened about 12 months ago and has happened 3-4 times since. It’s an upstairs bathroom, fed from a tank in the attic. The tank is about 8 Meters away and feeds a bath, sink and toilet. The tank...
