Nest Thermostat Recommendation

Hi,

I’m getting a new boiler this week as the old one has broken down. I’ve been checking out this forum and would like your advice on a thermostat.

We currently don’t have a thermostat separate to the boiler so I’m very excited about the options available but at the same time I need a wireless one to avoid drilling into my walls everywhere.

We were looking at a Nest as it looked brilliant, had great reviews and gave us endless options which we’ve never had available. We’re planning to stay in the house a few more years and as we work different shifts it’s an advantage to be able to control it out of the house.

However, it seems people have problems, even though the reviews are still very positive. I just wanted to ask what people’s impressions are on here of the system and if there’s any other alternatives you’d recommend? I’m aware Nest needs power so we’ll have to drill into the wall somewhere but I can’t see a system which doesn’t need power or a direct line to the boiler. Also a lot of the others seem to be around the same price?

Really hinges on what you are looking to get out of the stat???

What boiler are you having fitted as most decent brands have their own all singing all dancing smart stats now

cant see the point of them, all those I have installed the customers complain dont work etc etc, basically just too much hassle to learn to use unless your seven years old. You would be better off installing outside temp sensors to allow your boiler to work more efficiently, use more zones in the building and set them up properly rather than having an all singing n dancing on off switch

Nest is very straightforward to use, in fact much more straight forward than most other programmable stats.
The new ones are now Opentherm ready and because they're connected to the Internet, they know the outdoor temperature so external sensors aren't required.

Opentherm allows full control over the boiler output temperature to the radiators depending on the outdoor temperature, as opposed to an on/off type stat (providing the new boiler will be Opentherm compatible).
