What grades at school do you need to become a plumber? i have heard lots of different stuff but not sure what to belive, any help?
Also what is the best way to go about becoming a plumber?
Thanks

hi mate, when i was in school the prefferred grades were 5 C's or better. if you can, i would try and get an apprenticeship position as this is the best way to learn, but its not so easy to get an apprenticeship i sent out hundreds of letters over 2 years asking for an apprenticeship and never got one.

but if you dont get the good grades dont worry you can start on lower courses and work your way up, it takes longer but you still get the end result,

Good luck

J

Aw thanks mate. So im currently doing intermediate 2's at school, is that any good? Ill probly get higher than c's in them, im in scotland btw so if it works differently please tell? Also are grades not totaly important, is it better to get an apprenticeship?

What I would do is start looking at plumbing companies now in your local area and write out a covering letter and a CV with predicted grades on send them off or get your head in the office and let them know you are interested. If they are larger companies, get yourself in plumbing merchants and ask about to see if anyone would be willing to take you on for work experience if you cant get that sorted through school (weekends etc). Id start now though! Larger and Small companies tend to take on in the June/July/August months for the start of the college year in spetember so if you get some onsite experience it will count they may even give you a start but dont leave it lingering if its something you want to do you must get the ball rolling now.

You may also want to check out JTL - [DLMURL="http://www.ukplumbersforums.co.uk/redirector.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jtltraining.com%2F"]JTL training - electrical, plumbing and engineering Advanced Apprenticeships[/DLMURL] , they help with the funding of apprenticeships so if you pass an apptitude test you are on their list for funding and they let companies who use them know of your success in the test. Then all you need is an employer(which is easily the hardest part im affraid)

Get some plumbing literature...... [DLMURL="http://www.ukplumbersforums.co.uk/redirector.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fastore.amazon.co.uk%2Ftilfor-21%3F_encoding%3DUTF8%26node%3D12"]Dave's Amazon Store - Plumbing books[/DLMURL] and start reading up on it to familarise yourself with it, I found the JTL NVQ Levels 2 and 3 & Technical Certificate By John Thompson and Plumbing by R.D.Treloar very useful and they serve as an excellent reference. They should be a good start at least for a level 2 stard should you gain an apprenticeship, but best of all dont give up.

HIPS is set up for young plumbers and a great resource.

Also take time to read this page as a good introduction. Career Advice

Which sets the stall out (so to speak)

If you get a chance we are also supporting Celia at the Hipex show near London.

Hope its of some use?
