Following on from my German PrePacked House thread, I'm going through the detailed heat loss calcs. I was given U values for roof, external walls and triple glazed windows of 0.14, 0.16 and 0.7 respectively. Having done the first floor I'm struggling to justify another other than maybe a dozen 100W bulbs to heat the place.

Haven't looked at a house like this before and just a little surprised by the numbers I'm getting.

Good isn't it ! & if you put in a heat exchange ventilation unit that helps with the ventilation losses it gets better. Now a heat pump will work.
Instead of spending our money trying to tart up all our existing leaking properties why the hell we aren't building more of these I don't know.

Cheers Chris, I was doubting my calcs. They have plans for a heat recovery ventilation system as well.
Looks like the heat pump will be a real winner. It'll be a mix of underfloor and thermaskirt. They're keen on the thermaskirt to minimise the costs of the underfloor heating.

Happy days.

They are airtight ! Pretty much their always cosy without the heating on !

Happy days if I could swap my gas bill there theirs.

No gas, it's off grid. They're having a 4kw PV install on the roof. They own all the land around their current house which is up for sale and they've fenced off an area that the house is going to be built on.

Germans. Nothing if not efficient!

Though the gentle sound of bomb bay doors opening every time you open the front door could be disconcerting.......
