Just want the experienced guys/gals to tell us how to ensure we get top dollar for scrap. I always feel I could have gotten more pounds each time I drive off after weighing my scrap? Any tips, please?

Ring around the lical scrappys and ask for current prices. Weigh in at best one

Obviously seperate the brass from the copper as best as possible.

Bright new tube is worth more so remove fittings even solder and weigh in separately. Also buy some baggage scales and bag and weigh before u arrive. Don't use buckets as they will deduct 1 or even 2kg when bucket weighs nothing like that. . Strip insulation from cylinders. Remove the immersion from cylinder. Strip boilers. Don't get caught with dry cement in pipes or tanks.

The immersion from cylinder is what I realy needed to know;)
thanky muchy
As for boilers, I'm not sure I will have the time to strip them down. Normally, I get there, offload all copper, brass, lead, etc. Then I'm told to take van onto weigh 'bridge'. Then the 5-6 boilers are removed. I'm told to get van back onto 'weigh bridge'. The difference in van weight is used to price the scrap value of boiler. Last time, all I got was ÂŁ35 for 6 boilers? I wasn't impressed. Since then, I mostly leave it outside where I'm working so it can be gone b4 I finish work. On the odd occasion when I finish work late, I'm then 'forced' to take boiler home in van.

Some scrappies split things up into a dozen catagories but up here (not interested in cable prtices) you get bright copper (nicked new bundles usually) heavy copper and brazery.
Heavy copper is anything with soldered joints covered in paint bird shyt or whatever and also includes lead washed heat exchangers.
Brazery is copper with brass fittings still on or cylinders. They will usually knock 1 or 2 kilo (about a fiver) off for a foamed cylinder so strip that off.

There is about 60p/kilo difference between copper and brazery so it is worth seperating.

Buy a cheap chop saw like http://www.NoLinkingToThis/p/titan-ttb599bns-2000w-355mm-chop-saw-230v/26081 or a mitre saw that cuts anything like this Evolution RAGE3-S 210mm Sliding Compound Mitre Saw 240V | Sliding Mitre Saws | NoLinkingToThis

Cut all brass off your copper but leave the soldered joints.
Strip the copper heat exchangers from combis and lightweights (ÂŁ15 -25 each)
Strip all the brass from the boilers.
The rest of the boiler can go in with the mixed ferrous, rads etc for about twenty quid a van load.
Electric motors (pumps fans etc) are about 35p/kg if you want to be pedantic.

Phone around a couple before you take it in and if you have a lot, like about 50kilos or more negotiate the price before you unload it. You should get an extra 20p or so/kilo.
It wouldn't be the 1st time i've jumped back in the van and they shouted me back with a better price. Don't be taken for a mug.
Next trip you make will more than pay for your chop saw.

Go your scrappy and ask them, I did and he gives me a better price if I separate everything over the top and cut to a certain length, only did it once when I had time to kill

Another scrappie tip.

Keep a few small cuttings of copper seperate in your pocket.
Their scales are set to kilos so when they weigh it throw a couple of cuttings on the scales until it pings over the next kilo.
Thats another ÂŁ3.40 thanks

Phone before you go and take note of the price per kilo, phone a few and visit the best priced, look at the scale weight of your goods but just remember they will give you dirty copper prices for nuts n olives so make sure it's just copper and seperate your materials, ,,, Most places you see the weight on the scale so you can work it out yourself to make sure your getting the agreed price on the phone,
