explosion apparently happened in the cellar is the latest.
as i have already mentioned, i think the meter is down there in these houses!.

6 other properties are also being pulled down for safety.

On the news only minutes ago it was stated;

"The domestic gas supply to the destroyed property was NOT THE CAUSE OF THE EXPLOSION".

Seriously? What else sounds like a gas explosion, looks like a gas explosion and destroys a house like a gas explosion?

Reading the comments on the article in the mail ( Newark blast: Was fatal explosion caused by father trying to fit new central heating? | Mail Online )

Les Rourke was my uncle. I can state emphatically he was not fitting central heating. This article is revolting. he was a clever intelligent man. he would not touch anything where gas was concerned. he was in the cellar filling gaps in the floor boards for insulation. The gas in the house was only from the gas fire in the front room to the mains on an external wall. It has been confirmed that No gas pipes are in the cellar!

Thanks for the kind comments of a few. The poor guy was probably re-fitting the floorboards and hit a nail through a gas pipe - Pete , Croydon, 21/5/2013 10:04 No, this was not the case. There was no gas pipes near the cellar or in the cellar. When my uncles body was recovered his body was not burned in any way. It has been ruled out he was the cause. He was filling in gaps where there was damp in the cellar. insulating.

So according to a nephew it seems he wasn't putting heating in or playing with gas.

Could of been anything from stored up chemicals igniting to illegal activities we wont know til the police announce it

The mains gas supply has been ruled out as the cause of an explosion which killed two people at a terraced house in Nottinghamshire, police have said.

Leslie Rourke, 71, and his daughter-in-law, Jeanette Rourke, 40, died in the blast in Wright Street, Newark, on Sunday.

Four other people were injured in the explosion, including Mrs Rourke's husband Nick.

No leaks were found in the domestic gas supply to the house.

Nottinghamshire Police said they were keeping an open mind about the cause of the blast but were looking at the possibility that it was caused by a family member doing DIY in the home.

Up to 100 people had to leave their homes after the explosion but most have now been allowed to return.
Two neighbouring properties are being demolished.
Via: BBC News - Newark house blast: Gas supply ruled out as cause

Walks like a duck sounds like a duck... but what is it?

The reporting as usual is not clear.
It originally stated that the gas supply was not the cause.
Reading above it says the Domestic gas supply TO the house, as in Nat Grid's pipework?, was not the cause.
It doesn't say the Domestic installation and appliance (only gas fire according to the nephew) was leak free and not the cause but if that has been tested it means the house fell down without damaging the internal pipework or external meter.
