Hi -

A friend of mine has bought a franchise installing heat pumps. One rquirement of an install reqires a Gas Registed person to disconnect domestic gas supply - we basically rip out the old gas central heating system, disconnect the supply and then replace the system with a heat pump system which is entirely electric of course.

What mimimum qualification is required to carry out this kind of gas work?

The ACS courses seem to be the only root I can take to gain the appropiate qualification and then I can register for Gas Safe - this costs £3,000 upwards plus registration fees. This seems excessive and I wondered (hoped!) if there is an alternative root which would allow me to become Gas Safety Registered specifically for the type of gas work I will be undertaking, ie. shut off the gas supply safely.

I have no gas qualifications nor do I have any experience.

Help much appreciated,
thanks in advance ;)

Doesn't take long thanks.

Hi Andy.

In one sentence, you have summed up everything that is wrong with this industry.

Has your friend also bought the expertise and experience required to run such a business? I'm guessing not, otherwise you wouldnt be asking such a basic question. (To which the answer is "no", by the way.)

Its like me buying a dental practice and going on an internet forum to ask if there is a cheap way of qualifying as a dentist, as I am only going to do extractions.

Just for the record, heat pumps are notorious in the industry for being difficult to specify correctly. Even for those of us that have been doing it for 30 years.

We run a community village hall and have a large kitchen provided for the use of hirers. This includes a Lincat SLR9 gas cooker which I believe is a 23.8Kw appliance with all six burners and oven on max. This was installed some 10 years ago and has passed all subsequent Gas Safety inspections as...

Hi, Can anyone advise as to why the cold water to my bathroom keeps airlocking? This originally happened about 12 months ago and has happened 3-4 times since. It’s an upstairs bathroom, fed from a tank in the attic. The tank is about 8 Meters away and feeds a bath, sink and toilet. The tank...
