Hello
I was called earlier today by my wife who was in a bit of a panic after a visit from a British Gas heating Engineer, I have to admit his training in telepathic Boiler diagnosis must have been a sight to behold as he had pretty much determined the cause of our boiler problems without entering our property! seems because we had failed to pay BG to power flush our system two years ago when a previous engineer had advised and quoted us to do it meant our current problem was the result. But he didnt stop there, he also informed my wife that due to a change in legislation our flue was no longer able to perform its task and would need an expensive upgrade, if we didnt pay for the work ,the next time BG serviced our system it would be condemned, he went on to inform my wife that our boiler was also on the reduced parts list, and that if they didnt have the part they would no longer fix it, so an i quote " rather than spend money on the flush and the flue it would be better to put the money towards the cost of a new boiler".
Now call me skeptical but im not willing to accept the word of a dude who stands to benefit from replacing something that was working perfectly well for the two years prior despite being told it needed flush, not to mention the local heating engineer who i asked to check it after BG told me it needed flushing was not convinced after he inspected it.Our local engineer did mention our pipes were narrow gauge and were prone to cloggs and that our boiler was too large for our house and not very popular with BG as it is prone to faults, but a good boiler when working correctly.
Anyway the BG engineer didnt manage to make a sale and did fix the boiler but said it was unlikely it could be fixed again by BG as it was on the "reduced parts list" because it was more than 10 years old.
so the questions i have are , should i drop the homecare400 cover and move?, will i get the same response from another company? if the life time of a boiler is only 10 years or less why are they so expensive to replace? its a big kettle at the end of the day, okay i know im over simplifying it but its job is to heat up water and move it around some pipes, if its life span is so short then why are BG quoting the price of a quality used car for a new one? If sludge is caused by water moving through steel/iron radiators and is so detrimental to the boiler and heating system, why did someone make radiators out of steel/metal or foresaw that it might be an issue and coat the inside of them with something that doesnt breakdown when its in contact with water? thats like making a bath out of MDF.
