Hi

I have a damaged salt-glazed bend at the bottom of my soil stack and so need to replace this.
In case I cannot remove this cleanly from the horizontal salt-glazed pipe that goes off to the manhole (unlikely I have read) then my plan is to cut through the horizontal section at some point ans then use a Fernco to join up my new uPVC.

Problem is the salz-glazed horizontal bit has quite a bit of concrete around it.
I gather this is a very dodgy area since trying to carefully remove the concrete generally results in breaking the salt-glazed pipe.
Is the general approach to just tap at it very gently and hope for the best?

regards
Jon

best with an angle grinder just keep cutting into the concrete to the depth of the pipe lots of cuts and tap away with a small sharp chisel

You can get a connector that slips inside the salt glaze to take plastic soil pipes. It's similar to a pan connector but in black. Saves having to clean the outside.

I had the same problem last year and asked at a few merchants if there was something like this but was told nothing like it. have you got a link.

Hi Mike,

Is it considered a last resort to use such a connector considering that it restricts the internal diameter of the joint and therefore increases the risk of blockage?

Jon
I would only use it in the vertical where it is unlikely to give any problems but NOT in the horizontal where it would retain water & solids.

The restriction is minimal and I actually prefer them to using a rubber connection as there is no jagged edge for stuff to catch on. As Chris said I wouldn't use one horizontally.

There is actually a method of repair for cracked drains that my old company used to do, it involves a fibreglass/resin sleeve and a balloon type apparatus. Pretty specialist stuff IIRC

If the problem is a horizontal then a drain liner connector should be used. Not a plumbers problem normally.

Just smash out everything and reinstate! Can all be done in half a day! Forget trying to sneeze and the re lining idea. Reinstatement all the way! :30:

Don't think they can be as bad a pan connector which will also fit! Some idiot used a 90 degree pan connector on the base of my parents stack to take it from cast iron to salt glaze. Surprisingly they never had a problem in the 10+ years it had been in there.
