Advice for heating system to install

Hi Guy's,

I am moving into a property that currently has storage heating and no gas supply. The hot water system is a vented set up with tank in the loft and cylinder in a cupboard under the stairs. I have arranged for a gas connection to the house but am left wondering what to do for the best for a new water/heating set up? the house is a standard size 3 bedroom semi with one bathroom/toilet.
Would a combi suffice and provide ok water pressure to an upstairs shower? as I have read a shower pump cannot be installed with a combi.
If a combi is installed would the cylinder come out or stay as a hot water back up?
Or would a system boiler with the cylinder be a good option?

Combi will be fine if you have flow and pressure

Hello Deanoss,

Yes, a boiler would be enough to sort the heating and hot water. But I would still get an engineer to let him check main water pressure. If you think of loft conversion or a second bathroom with shower I would not go with a combination boiler but with a system boiler combined with a unvented hot water cylinder. If you get a combi boiler I would make sure to install pipeworks with insulation and thermostatic radiator valves. That way you will be able to safe a lot more energy.
Where are you based ?
Did you receive any quotes from some engineers?

What kind of boiler would like ? I would not recommend anything less than Worcester or Vaillant.
Me personally would recommend Vaillant but everyone has their own preference. You also need to know how much you would like to spend.

Really depends on your budget a modern combi will do the job well and will free up the space where the existing hot water cylinder is as this will be removed , only draw back is there is no back up for hotwater but saying that most boiler manufacturers offer a long warranty should there be a issue the other thing to consider is how much hotwater you may need and the number of occupants who may live in the house. Thanks for all the replies, I will be looking to do the rads and pipe work to the boiler/tank myself as I have experience of this but will need an expert for the boiler install, gas connections etc etc. I won't skimp out on the boiler as I know I may live to regret it! In Spain many years back a company I worked for used to install a lot of gas & oil boilers which were called Junkers out there lol, which I believe are Worcester and they seemed very good.

I'm based in Lowestoft on the East Coast in Suffolk, Kop whereabouts in Norfolk are you based?

Why are you thinking of changing it? About the only thing that might be past its best is the boiler and you could just replace that, with a modern heat-only boiler. I'll get some flak from installers, but I wouldn't have a combi unless it was unavoidable. A friend of mine runs a gas company and he wouldn't have one, gets most if his work from combi problems.
