Went to service a baxi BBu today, boiler burner was cracked, boiler case was baddly chroded, every thing else was fine.
should have recomened a new boiler soon, or at leaset get a new burner. BUT customer is 84, his wife was up stairs dieing of cancer and you could see they had nothing, (charged £20.00 for service). Yes iam wrong for not saying any think, but what would you have done?

classed it as ID if the burners cracked as combustion's affected i can see there family thanking you when they die of co,in regards to the corrosion on the combustion case was it holed or not?

It is a sad story. And I've been in a similar situation before. But you MUST always do your job and take the correct action. In my opinion you haven't done that I'm afraid.

Not harsh at all. Do understand the op's quandary but emotions aren't a defence in a court of law.

We've all been there. Sometimes, as much as it hurts, you have to be heartless.

And I guarantee if you'd sat down with them, explained why you turned it off and what their options were, they'd have taken it ok.

Then refuse to take any money, I'd bet they'd give the job to replace.

I'd honestly go back and tell them you've had second thoughts on it and looked it up.

totally agree with this^

I see where your coming from but take away all the emotion away from it and its still ID, as a GSR we all have to do our job to the standard. If anything went a miss they will point the fingers at you.

Agree with Croppie, put aside anything else and just make your decision on the appliance. I always follow regs but most importantly think would I want this running in my house? Honesty and a good explanation should see you right. If they are elderly sometimes it helps in, politely, asking if they have family or carers you can also explain it to.

If they are genuinely potless, I would be sorting the job out of my own pocket (and have done it before) before leaving an ID situation.

Could always GIVE them a 20 quid fan heater to keep them going. I put emphasise give as you are no longer responsible for it. If you lend them a heater and it goes bang then it's your fault

One of the biggest functions of the UKPF is education in one form or another. Much the same a gassafe. They will only prosecute as a last resort. The op made a mistake, he knows that, his posting was a confession, he's been advised accordingly and I hope he heeds said advice.

It's education.

'To err is human, to forgive is divine!'

just a thought but go round tonight, turn off gas, then when you get call in morning explain it is an irreplaceable part and boiler will need replacing. just hope they call you and not someone else.

Unfortunately in this game there is no room for sentiment. Even more if you are gas safe. I always find that you get shafted when trying to do a favour or be the good Samaritan. You know the score and I'm sure you will do the right thing for you and them.

Don't confuse him, he'll be asking what a ballofix is next.

Wonder what erj ended up doing with regards to this old couple?

Hopefully it's all sorted. They are happy that they are safe and op is happy too.
Everyone happy! That would be nice!

It is a tricky situation I can see why he did it and it was done not with malleus but with a good heart
But it was and is a problem that needs sorting ASAP
And I'm sorry that I went off topic

Note the model of it, post it on here incase someone is ripping one out and has the usable parts! Pretty sure you'd only be asked for the postage.

Hi. I'm having some issues with my boiler / central heating and have enlisted a local 'Combi Heating Specialist' to sort it out but he seems to be making things worse. I really need another expert's opinion, to put my mind at rest, or help me make the decision to stop using his services. I...

I’m not a heating engineer but I’m fairly knowledgeable on the way systems work. But I have come across an issue which I’m wondering is common. Earlier this year I had a fully licensed engineer install a new baxi combi in a property I’m doing some work on. Great job done without any problems...

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but my family and I are starting to crack. I'll start at the beginning, and maybe someone will see something that makes sense to them. We live in a council property, and a couple of years ago our boiler (a Promax 28 Combi) started flashing us the...
