For reference it transpired that the expansion vessel had failed; pressed the pin in the schraeder valve down and had a handy instant wash. Thanks for the support, all.
Had it actually gone or was it just condensation?

I am pretty sure it had gone, reasoning so based on fact that I drained out a washing up bowl and then some, and that when I attempted to re-pressurise with foot pump no pressure was retained by the vessel and more water blew out.

Out of the inlet heating side or the air valve ?
