Discuss Sticky gunk under bathroom sink in the Bathrooms, Showers and Wetrooms area at

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this.

I recently moved into a flat and while I was cleaning, I found some a dirty, sticky substance underneath a bathroom sink (in the joint between the sink basin and the stand). As I just moved in, I have no idea what it is. I have uploaded some picture here: Imgur

It looks horrible and was wondering if anybody here has any experience. Could it be a botched job at sealing the joint? Just accumulated dirt/gunk? Can I safely remove it? Should I seal the joint up?

Any advice or help would be much appreciated. =)

Looks like it might be putty, probably used to bed the basin to the pedestal.
Could scrape it out and use a silicone for a neater finish.

The pictures are in the imgur link in my original post.

This is my first time doing such works. Do you have any advice on how to scrape it out without damaging the basin/pedestal?

    Thanks in advance.

Something plastic or wooden won't scratch the ceramic.

Then rub off the last little bits with a dry old tea towel ;)
