Discuss Replacing a section of terracotta waste pipes with PVC? in the UK Plumbing Forum | Plumbing Advice area at PlumbersForums.net

Good day,

Can someone please advise me if it is possible to replace old terracotta waste pipes for PVC in a section only?

My sewage line goes downhill away from the house to the sewer main. What I assume to be an inspection shaft is at the bottom of my property.

I want to replace only a section at the bottom leading into the shaft to prevent tree damage once I put a hedge in. I considered replacing the whole length of the terracotta pipe (roughly 40 m), but existing garden structures seem to complicate this.

Is it possible to do this?

I also suspect the depth at which to lay the new pipes would have to increase. Would I have to change the whole connection to the sewage main, including my inspection shaft?

Thank you.

P.S. I am not a plumber, so I plan to get the work carried out by a contractor. I am looking into what to expect before I bring anyone in.

A section can be replaced wit PVC.
The problem can be in cutting the Earthenware pipe cleanly, without causing any breaks or cracks.

As for deepening the point where the drain enters the boundary shaft, the same issues can occur.
You may end up going way deeper than you think to connect onto the vertical shaft, depending on where the joins are in the earthenware.

If you really going to go to that much trouble to lower the drain and depending on the depth of the boundary trap, you may as well replace the lot. Vertical shaft and boundary trap.

If you can, measure to the water level in the boundary shaft and add about 500mm. that will give you the depth you need to dig to replace the lot.

Hope this helps
