Customer wants rad changed, appears to be rusty on bottom. Then she says she *thinks* it gets hot with hot water, independent of heating.

I'm guessing that if this is the case it a) shouldn't be a standard rad b) is likely behind the rusting c) could be contaminating the hot water

Am I right? What would you advise? I suppose first thing would be to get them make sure whether it does or doesn't come on with hot water.

Need to find out if the radiator works well when boiler is only heating hot water.
I would suspect it is done that way, so bathroom rad heats all year when hot water is heated.
On a separate point, that rad will rust outside on the bottom due to damp towels being dried on it.

If it was just directly from the cylinder water it would be serious, but rare to find that done.

Ah yes, I remember this being explained to me before now. It did ring a bell. So what is the reason it's not longer an acceptible practise? Presumably once it's already done you're allowed to change like for like?

Incidentally why would drying wet towels make it rust from the bottom?

Thanks
