I've just started out on my own, so need to get public liability insurance but am a bit unsure how much cover i need. I'm sure i've seen somewhere that i need at least 2mil, but is it as simple estimating how much potential damage can be caused? I'll only be doing domestic jobs, and can't see me working any places worth more than that just yet.

Also, ive come up with a quote of £350 for 2mil cover plus £1000 tools, does that sound reasonable?

Thanks in advance for any help

2 mil minimum, price could be cheaper, have a shop around. Make sure it covers you for hot work.

its not the price but the amount of excess they charge you on a claim, should be around £250, some cheap covers want £2500 plus!

Oh this was £500 excess. Ive been to a couple of comparison sites, that was the cheapest so far. Also tried corgi, that was dearer.

Any other suggestions of where to try?

Simply business, iv always found them to be fair. 2 mill is the min I'd say. If you start doing more commercial work. I.e hospitals then they usually require 10 mill. Also consider the working at heights. As working on roofs can easily push you over 10m

steer clear of simply business, upped my cover for apprentice and excess went upto £2500!!! Talk to courtprice brokers, best cover i have found yet, they specialise in plumbers so know their stuff, not the cheapest but likely to pay up when needed.
