Hey Plumbers Forum,

I'm James 33 and I've just completed the 6035 Level 2 Diploma in Lambeth College London and I'm looking for an apprenticeship or someone to take me on and help me achieve my NVQs.

I'm also thinking about going back to college to do the 6035 Level 3 Diploma in September, although from reading quite a few posts on here I have to ask is it worth it? Would it be best just to aim for work and the NVQs?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome Jim,
My advice is, for the time-being at least is, get some experience and 'finish off' your quals, with the 6189 NVQ Level II.
You do not need to be employed in order to complete your NVQ. Find a suitably qualified Plumber and offer your services cheaply or maybe freely in order to complete the 'on-site' portfolio.
Then reevaluate your position. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice Teabreak.

I have a contact, through a family friend, that I'm about to call and ask if he will take me on.

I was told by my course tutor that I should do the Level 3 6035 Diploma whilst at the same time working on site for the Level 2 NVQ 6189... The two birds one stone approach. Would you recommend this to be a good plan of action?

Hi Again Jim,
Apparently the Level III version of C&G 6035, differs from Level II in that it CANNOT be used as a pre-requisite towards full Level III NVQ.
So as a qualification to improve you employability, it's worthless. However, you would be gaining more knowledge, which is always good. There are also no Water Regs or Unvented Certs. included.
Therefore I would not recommend the 6035 Level III, get some experience and register to complete your NVQ (C&G 6189) Level II.
Once you have this 'under your belt', you will be in a better position to evaluate your options. Plumbing is a very diverse profession, offering many varying career paths or specialisations e.g. Bathroom Installation, Central Heating, Oil or Gas Engineer, Drainage and Lead Weathering. There are then, many specialist courses you can take.

I hope this advice will assist you in reaching a suitable decision. Good luck in whatever you decide.

it can be used to reduce assessment of the 6189

I ' am afraid you are mistaken. The 6189 NVQ Level II does not use any of the 6035 in centre assessments at either Levels II or III.
However, if I have misinterpreted your post, in that yes some units may be APLed across to complete 6189 Level III. But you would have to enrol and pay to undertake the outstanding units and most importantly be employed.
My personal view is that Level III, prepares the candidate for a supervisory role. Without any 'real' workplace experience, I would not consider anyone for that role without experience.

Yes certain units can be carried over from the 6035 hence reduce assessment on the 6189. Also the in centre practical assessment do have duplication and therefore can be used.
My personal view is supervisory skills come from experience rather than a qual regardless of level. I wouldn't consider anyone for supervisory role without real experience either, I wouldn't discourage them from all the valuable learning they could recieve at level 3 which would only assist them when/if they do get real work experience
