is there another way to pipe size?

Hi all.

Currently im doing my gas course at college. the other week we were shown how to pipe size. the lecturer got out the big book and showed us a table to use to figure out pipe sizes, i was just wondering if there is another way to pipe size i.e some kind of sum. cant imagine it would be too good if you turn up at a job and realise you lost the sizing chart.

i keep a copy of charts, and viperbooks with updates, and 6th edition in the van. at all times.

majority of gas fitters wont bother with the chart
most domestic installs figure on 22mm with 15mm spur for hob/gas fire or similar such device//never go from 15mm to 22 allways oversize rather than undersize

Still haven't found a way of not referring to the viper book. Once saw a guy get out a chart wheel to calculate a gas run, but personally I still use the charts in the book.

There is software available that will run on a PDA/smartphone but you can't beat the charts. I keep all of my reference material in a briefcase in the van so I can refer to it any time.

Sure you can, but its complicated and involves processing loads of info, and as Plumbers are usually busy people they all go for the charts.

Its easier.

But did you know you can get a similar chart for gas flues also? Its to help decide flue runs in new or modernised properties. Have a nose around the Selkirk flues site, its interesting.

I've been required to use flue resistance factors in the past where disputes have occurred about possible spillage in the grey areas. Its a case of the user saying its spilling and the fitter saying its not. A warm flue and smoke match are inconclusive, so what do you do?

After all the flue may behave in different ways at different times for all kinds of reasons.

What I usually do, if there is no obvious reason for spillage, is measure the flue, calculate the resistance factors, and if they go over those allowed, then I refer it back to the flue manufacturer to arbitrate.

If they say its fine, after they have tested it, then its fine.

Yes! Okay its passing the buck! But the manufacturers are specialists and so should know far more about their products than me. Its better in the case of disputes over spillage to be as sure as you can be than just guess. Its somebodies life at risk.
