usage
The usage of a language is the ways in which its written and spoken variations are routinely employed by its speakers; that is, it refers to "the collective habits of a language's native speakers", as opposed to idealized models of how a language works or (should work) in the abstract. For instance, Fowler characterized usage as "the way in which a word or phrase is normally and correctly used" and as the "points of grammar, syntax, style, and the choice of words."In the descriptive tradition of language analysis, by way of contrast, "correct" tends to mean functionally adequate for the purposes of the speaker or writer using it, and adequately idiomatic to be accepted by the listener or reader; usage is also, however, a concern for the prescriptive tradition, for which "correctness" is a matter of arbitrating style.Modern dictionaries are not generally prescriptive, but they often include "usage notes" which may describe words as "formal", "informal", "slang", and so on. "Despite occasional usage notes, lexicographers generally disclaim any intent to guide writers and editors on the thorny points of English usage."
Hi all,
I keep reading about how you should use a smart thermostat. Set it to the temp to want the home to be and hey presto it takes care of itself. But realistically who does this or rather who does this work for.
With mine I just use it to turn the heating on now and then for short periods...
Hi i wonder if anybody can help with my query, the only gas appliance i have is a ideal Mexico super cf455 boiler, historically my gas usage was 12kwatts a year it is now double that figure at around 24,000 kwh, the boiler is only on for very short amounts of time as in not left on all...
Hello Everyone. I'm back! It's been a year since my original post and I still haven't managed to resolve the mysterious water usage in my home. It's driving me nuts as I just can't figure out what's going on and Thames Water aren't interested. I've attached some screenshots from over the...
We have an unvented cylinder with a Horstmann Electronic 7 timer. The cylinder only serves a wet room which is very rarely used. The rest of the house is served by a Vaillant combi boiler.
The timer on the cylinder is set to heat up water 3 times per 24 hours, which I think it is the default...
Good morning,
I have a U6 gas meter (ft3) supplying a worcester greenstar combi boiler. It is currently using about 1.2 ft3 of gas per hour with the central heating on. Is this a normal amount. The reason I ask if I have just had a 41 day bill of £400. The home is in Scotland and we have only...
Hi
Not sure if anyone can give any ideas - but
I’ve got a Worcester Bosch junior 24i system boiler.
For the past 10 years I’ve lived In the house - the average usage of gas has been about 10,000kwh. For the past 2 years my average has been 58000kwh. (Boiler is the only gas appliance in the...
Hello there. I'm hoping somebody can provide me with some guidance on an issue that's been ongoing now for over 2 years! Thames Water moved my home onto a smart meter and ever since then, the daily water usage is showing that water is being used every night between midnight and 7am. On...
Hello Everyone,
I hope someone can advise on this problem that is annoying me more and more.
I live in a 1900s mid terraced property.
My water supply is somehow linked to my neighbours water usage and this is now really annoying me. I can hear the water 'being run' through the water pipes in...
Hi all
This is only about my third/fourth post, so go easy. Also, I'm only an enthusiastic amateur, not a pro...
I'm having issues with the waterboard and can't work out what's happening. For the past three months, they're saying we're using a huge quantity of water - 700 litres per day at...
Hello,
Not strictly plumbing, but need your advice nonetheless as I'm out of ideas.
We have recently moved into newly renovated apartment (victorian house converted into flats) with new individual smart meters under the pavement. According to the meter our monthly usage is about 20-25 m3 of...
Hi all,
I am redoing a toilet. I would like, as you flush the toilet, to use the water that refills the reservoir to go to a little sink first where you can wash your hands before that water fills the reservoir. I do not wish for a faucet on that sink, just a pipe. The water leaving the sink...
Hi - hope someone can give some advice!
Have had a vaillant ecotec 630 installed with unvented cylinder, mains pressurised supply with digital thermostat in the living room. It is a 5 bed, 3 bath house.
The dual fuel bill for 2 months was £600, 545kWH per month for the electricity and 4,640kWH...
Hi there, we replaced our Rotex Sanicube thermal store after discovering large amounts of sediment in our hot water supply. It was replaced with a Wocester Bosch unvented 250l cylinder.
The sediment issue was resolved immediately but have noticed a large increase in oil usage. Probably going...
My rented accommodation currently has no boiler control whatsoever: no timer or programmable unit. I need to control the heating at the boiler by either increasing or decreasing the flow temperature and turning it down low at night. I will be soon be fitting a smart control system (such as a...
Hi all
I'm in the midst of starting a fairly large new build property. The main house has a boiler and fire and there is also a separate coach house with it's own boiler. All appliances will be ran from the same meter in the main house (the coach house is approx 5m from meter location)...
Good morning all, I'm after advice so I hope this is the appropriate page to ask.
My wife is opening a health clinic and there will be 4 treatment rooms, a small kitchen and toilet. I haven't got a clue what to use for hot water but it will be electric. Each of the 4 treatment rooms will have a...
local council planning officer is asking for a water usage calculation on a large house.
6 shower rooms, 2 bathrooms, 3 cloakrooms. 4 outside taps, 2 kitchens and 1 utility.
Oh and a pool.
Do they want peak usage, adding all outlets at once? There’s only 4 people live there!
Do you know...
Hi All,
Really not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'm in a bit of a mess with my mum's energy supplier and I'm desperate for someone who knows what they're talking about to help.
End of last October my mum rented a two up- two down semi detached relatively modern house...
Since having the combi fitted my electricity usage has shot up.
Gone from an average of 163kwh a month to 340.
So even though gas usage is down a lot, electric going up means its costing us more.
Excuse my rough maths but i have the boiler on for approximately 52 hours a week, so if it was...
We usually use about 10 cubic meter of water every month.
I received a phone call from my water company said that we used about 16 cubic meter of water per month in the last 6 month.
So I monitor the water usage and it seems to be normal (1.2 units in 5 days)
Then we went to holiday for 6 days...
