multimeter
A multimeter is a measuring instrument that can measure multiple electrical properties. A typical multimeter can measure voltage, resistance, and current, in which case it is also known as a volt-ohm-milliammeter (VOM), as the unit is equipped with voltmeter, ammeter, and ohmmeter functionality. Some feature the measurement of additional properties such as temperature and volume.
Analog multimeters use a microammeter with a moving pointer to display readings. Digital multimeters (DMM, DVOM) have numeric displays and have made analog multimeters obsolete as they are cheaper, more precise, and more physically robust than analog multimeters.
Multimeters vary in size, features, and price. They can be portable handheld devices or highly-precise bench instruments. Cheap multimeters can cost under US$10, while laboratory-grade models with certified calibration can cost over US$5,000.

Can I check whether the Element is working (or broken) using a Multimeter?
I attach a photo of the 'Can and Element assembly' unit.
Hi guys went to a boiler lockout today. I started it up wouldn't fire slight buzz noise fan n motor dead.. change the capacitor fired 1st time! Delighted. Lucky I had a spare one in the van.
I’m looking for a decent multimeter and mainly been looking at the fluke 116. However I’ve just noticed that Kane do one also. Does anyone have any experience with them? It’s the Kane DM393C I’m interested in.
just did this course..
Learned LOADS! So much more confident with breakdowns now and using my meter to test components.
If anyone is thinking about doing it, stop thinking and just book it.
Instructor was a great guy, it's very relaxed and you'll not regret it.
Just thought I'd give feedback!!
Hi.
I'm looking at changing my electrical testing equipment. At the moment I use a cheap multi meter from maplin's that ive had for years, although this isn't really up to the job and is quite bulky.
I primarily use it for testing boilers and heat pumps so need to be able to measure quite a...
Some years ago I used a multimeter when working for British Gas, which apparently approximately 700 people apply for each engineering job advertised, no doubt most if not all the muppets who replied to my last post about a meter also appiled but didn't make the grade.
Any way, this meter was...
Evening.
I'm looking for a new multi meter, the only feature it has to have is what I think is called range finding. What I don't want it to do is trip the MCB when I test for volts but its set on ohms.
Not looking for anything more than that, what do you suggest?
Thanks
Hi, there.
I am considering buying a multimeter for my father as a Christmas gift. if anyone here owns one and could give some feedback as to there accuracy and quality. Thanks in advance.
Can you test voltage on a single wire using a multimeter?
If so, how?
I know this sounds like a dumb question but, say I want to find out the common wire on a cylinder stat. Do I just put one probe on the single wire?
(I don't have anything I can test here at home...)
Looking for a decent one to get. One I have now is crap.
Just for the usual testing for voltage/resistance over components.
Anyone know anywhere doing good deals?
I'v been replacing and fitting new boilers for a few years now but not had to do much in the way of fault finding and fixing in side the. Recently been given a multimeter by my boss as I've been teaching myself to wire a complete heating system from scratch( which is going really well). So as to...
My multimeter died last week and im going to need one tomorrow. I remember a thread on here where someone was saying the bloke who does the baxi course swears by the plumb center ones. Which one was it so I can pick one up tomorrow, they do 2, the compact one or the other one....
This one...
Hello all,
Please could you give me a quick overview on how to use a multimeter to test correct operation of boiler components, e.g.
Fans
Pumps
Thermistors
Thermostats
APS
Gas valves
Etc.
Cheers
Hi people
I've currently got a fluke t5 1000 meter and was looking at getting a fluke 116
Would I gain anything getting the 116 over already having the t5 1000??
Thanks
As above what Multimeters do you use for fault finding? And what analyser you all use also?
Secondly what Core Set and Core Drill works best for you?
Rough price would be blinding also. Cheers one and all
