absolute raging just bought another monument pair today and they start spinning, this is about my 5th pair this year, what manufacturer are you using and how reliable are they? are bahcos any gd?

i know what you mean there not as good as they used to be, i think there all the same i have tried every slice going and they all tram and spin, it just another way for manufacturers to get more money from us.

Had my Kopex for many years now, apart from a few new wheels and a good clean and oil up every so offten the still good, although the've had so much use there starting to get a bit to smooth and hard to grip in a V tight space!

got monument and copex as spares but i use el cheepos from ebay @£5 each. been using for 2 years now with only one new wheel.
i have since lost a 15mm one (boo hoo) but not a great loss at that price. i think there am-tech ones, exactly the same as rothy bar the name.

you can get blank kopex slices for a few quid now in local tool markets and they are just the same as rothenberger.

ive had 2 rothy's and the spring went on em in no time! so bought monument last time, worked well for 3 cuts then went downhill from there, lost em yesterday back to my merchants cheapy's only a 5er and lasted longer than any branded ones so far imo

I thought I was going paranoid, glad it's not just me that has a problem with these cutters. I'm on my 7th pair this year, normally end up chucking them in the bottom of the scrap bag to help build up the weight lol...

Oh this reminds me!!

Could these be the most pointless tool ever made?

An electric abs pipe cutter. REALLY!!?

Re: pipe slice
I've had the same kopex pipeslice for 21 years. It's had 17 new wheels and 8 new handles!:winkiss:

ive got a pair of rothenberge slices for about year and abit and always had problems with the slices keep slipping ... help.. need a better make or is there spares i can get for it ?

I use new ones on dry/new pipework only and older ones when cutting through wet pipes. I reckon the water attacks them. My 10mm is going really well and I think it's because I use it for oil as well which protects the metal to a certain extent. On the other hand it could be because it's orange.

I have had years of trouble with slices, especially 22mm. A couple of months back I changed the wheel with a bigger one which was one the handle of my adjustable cutter. The first cut or two, I could hardly turn it, it was so tight. It quickly loosened though and now it eats through the copper.

I've used all of them about, Lenox Irwin Bacho rottenburger monument Graham's own brand ......
Lenox - fine till wheel needs replacing then they never work properly again. 6 or 7 pairs!

Irwin same as Lenox and Graham's

Rottenburger team line from day dot

Monument good but springs stick after a while .

Soak them in wD of cutting oil.

For what it's worth I bought kopex 15, 22 & 28 5 years ago and are still going strong

If you're interested in the Bahco ones, the cheaper Forge Steel ones from screwfix are the actual same pipeslice.

got bahco replacement for cheaper ones i have but 22mm not cutting at all, 15mm is going through pipe like a hot knife through butter, using old slicer for 22mm pipes

I found the bahco ones spun easy because they werent so wide , i LIKED monument until mine went kaput under a year, but my last one lasted years,,, rothenberger, kopex ok, but ive gotta say i think alot of the muckups is due to the copper becoming thinner walled and not so resilient to the wheels,

Think it's the slices, made too poorly and the springs just tosh. I had a surfer 2 from about 2000 until 2008 and a set of kopex cutters from about 1999 but since they went I go through cutters once or twice a year and torch every two years. Not through use but lack of!

The kopex ones be it re branded as rothenberger or not were really good years ago. I would say at some point the manufacturing changed and the patent run out. They are a lot cheaper and poorly made now and there are lots of copy's.

I find the monument the best tbh. Have not touched a kopex for a while, think they are junk.

I find Rothenberger do the best 15 and 22. Monument does the best 28. Bought the forged steel pair as backup but they are awful. I think any slice needs regular TLC, especially if it gets wet.

Hi All
if you are having problems with pipe slices you should really look at the history of this tool, It was fist introduced as cutter to be used on pipework in fixed positions and not for general pipe cutting this was by the use of adjustable pipe cutters or hold on to your hats a hacksaw so this type of cutter was never designed for daily use but time has shown that a great deal of plumbers only use pipe slicers and not general purpose adjustable pipe cutters I believe the quality of this product whoever makes them was not that great so until a manufacture comes up with a better design they will still fail but if they produce an improved design they would lose out on a great deal of repeat sales or is this me being cynical

The older Kopex cutters I had never missed a beat, unfortunately I lost them. The newer Kopex ones never seemed to work as well, and I've now gone to Rothenberger simply because they were best priced at the time. They also seem to be adequate, but I'm still forever taking them apart to clean.

I do think painted pipework quickly stops them working as well, as does getting them wet, something to do with the rollers becoming stiffer I guess.

the rollers come off th spindle. smear with silivone grease and its not an issue. keeps em rolling nice and free.

biggest issue for me is the stupid spring losing tension too quickly.

Anyone found a decent pipe slice yet which at least a year. My 3month old rothenberger started spinning 2day iv cleaned and sprayed with wd40 but no joy

my monument slices are about 7 years old and they are still better than my more recent kopex and rothenberger ones. bought am tech slices a few months ago aswell and they are garbage the 22mm takes literally minutes to cut!

Anyone used tornado pipe slices. Browsing ebay and came across them British made mite give them a bash

No but they're similar to the bahco ones in the width of them, I tried the bahco ones and found them bad for threading the pipe , I know it's wrist action but never had a problem in 20 years until I used the thinner slices,

Used to buy expensive ones they get broken or lost, now I buy 2 or 3 of each size of cheap ones off of ebay (you're laughing) they work just as good come with spare blades and for the price if they break or you loose them it doesn't matter as much I paid £8 for a 15mm and 22mm been using them for around 9 months now every day and i havnt even had to change the blade yet and they cut fine never spiral look the same as rb's

I have some 15mm ones, lasted about two months and spring went kaput. Still sat in the box and get the occasional trip out if I can't be bothered hunting for my mate who normally takes my old Kopex ones.
