Hi this is for sure old hat, but is there a course for kitchen fitters to fit a gas hob and oven without haveing to do a phd in Gas central heating? in that i will never fit a CH system ever? in the last 10 years I have had a corgi or now gas safty guy fit the oven and hob and not one of them ever does a test, prob 20 - 30 guys they just fit the hob switch it on and drive off after issuing a cert. £60 for doing a hob and £100 for oven and hob. After all it's not rocket science is it? or have i missed somthing?

You can not get a ticket just for the hobs.

Yes, you've missed something - You can not touch gas without the gas ticket!

Well you are missing something fitz,there is more to it than you think,a lot of checks are made that you may not be aware of,hob position,position of items near hob,materials around hob,hob type,correct materials and connection to hob,ventilation requirements,isolation points,correct hob burners and nozzles,correct gas supply,correct gas pressures and working pressure,correct pipe sizing,pipe soundness ect,ect need I go on
always easy looking in from the outside,you are getting a decent price for the works,maybe concentrate on giving us enough clearance around the boilers :nonod::wink_smile:

£60 for driving to the job, couple of hours of the day gone, fiver materials, fiver to GSR, contribution towards thousands spent on insurances, training and affiliation, you're kidding????
 
It takes a lot of experience to make something look like anyone can do it........ easy ...........! :)
 
As said, you can't just do cookers. For what it would cost you to get gas registered forget it. Just pay the guys and add your markup to the price.

A while back (about 15 years ago) some smart people thought all you kitchen fitter guys should be corgi (as it was then) registered to be able to cut a gas pipe off a hob on a strip out, even if the gas guy came along and fitted the new one.
So loads of joiners went on the acs course and naturally passed and were fully qualified, not only to cut and cap a pipe but also in everything else gas wise they may want a go at. Most hardly knew the difference between a gas meter and a parking meter but that didn't matter too much, they were only cutting gas pipes and maybe joining a hob up!

Then the same smart people thought : wait a minute, maybe this is not such a good idea, we had better move the goalposts back a bit so that you actually need some experience before sitting your acs exams. Now there are 3 catagories of entrants depending on your experience. Good idea certainly but like every other thing in this world, if you can find the cash, someone will find a way (around).
 
its more like rocket science if you dont know what your doing as any mistakes and you will be on your way to mars.
unlike kitchen fitting.
 
what you do not see is what you do not know ! my tutor at college told me

"stan use your eyes they are your strongest tool "

so when I go to new property i do visual inspection as I am speaking to customer or just wondering around
I do not have to tell that I am doing it !!!

many kitchen fitters dont even know they are not alowed to disconnect a gas hose as part of work. If you want to fit your own gas appliances then good for you, just do the correct training course and qualifications so you dont end up in jail.

after you have spent a few thousand and proved your competence and paided your registration fee please fit as many gas hobs as you want, and please charge your customers £20, once you have fitted a few hundred you may have covered your costs of geting qualified.

Mystery Mira Elite QT Leak
